Wanted: Engine swap
84 Jeep Scrambler with very tired 258. Looking for a handy local to pull the current motor and install a new S&J reman 4.2L or 4.0L (engine choice depends on the install cost). Would love to attempt the job myself but unfortunately I don't have tools, the time, or the know-how.
Quotes from local shops with $100/hr rates have greatly exceed my allowance. So, if your interested in some cash and a dirty old Scrambler, PM me.

Go with the 4.0 if you can afford it. I'm not your wrench, though.
(Jose is a club member with a Scrambler that needs some love. That is the heart of the joke / hi-jack.)
Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

Here is what I was thinking. Anybody familiar with S&J engines?

S & J has been around for quite a while. I have used two of their reman engines for various projects over the years, and one of those found it's way into about 3 different rigs
At any rate, they used to have a pretty solid warranty, not sure if they still do or not, but I never had an issue with their work.
Not sure what your goal is for the Scrambler, but I'd go with a 258 and a Motorcraft 2G carb to start with. When setup properly, it's hard to distinguish from fuel injection, and it's a far cry cheaper and less complicated than even a TBI swap. That said, TBI is the next logical step when you decide you don't like the carb anymore, and it's not all that difficult.

Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...

We put a 2G on my kid's Scout II, and it seems to work pretty well. I think it needs some tuning at the moment, but he's working on that...He has one of my Holley 2300's to try, but it may be too much, and I'm not sure he can get the verticle pull throttle cable to work as it should on that carb.

Well, I have two hor stories about S&J. One of their engines only lasted a year, didn't have 10 on it and they wouldn't stand behind it. This happened to a 90 year old couple. They had to have another engine put in their truck and the new guy that put it in said he'd get the money out of them and nada...not a dime.
And the other person knew someone that the same thing happened to them, he was looking into them for an engine too. So he started doing his due diligence and found all kinds of bad thing said about them on the inturdnet.
Just sayin....beware!!!!

2G is a Rochester Carb. . .first gen 2-Jet. Not the one with the same pattern as the quadrajet, but the one with the same pattern as the crappy Carter BBD that is on the Scrambler now.
They were popularly found on small V8s like Chevy 283s in the late 60s/early 70s.
The swap is simple enough. ONE modification to the throttle linkage, a new air cleaner, and plugging a bunch of vacuum lines. EZ PZ. Whoever you have put the new motor in should rebuild one of these and install it for you at the same time.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Really appreciate the input.
Scooped up the S&J 258 with 7yr/100k mile warranty. Should be here tomorrow. 79chevy39.5's graciously volunteered to complete swap for me.
I will look into the Rochester 2G. Any other mods/maintenance we should perform at the same time?
engine mounts
vac lines
water pump
ford ignition?
etc.?
Once we get this done, it'll be lift kit and new rubber, then I can join you guys on the next outing.

Believe Toby is talking about the Motorcraft 2100 and 2150. These work good and are a popular conversion. They also are found on 60s early 70s ford small blocks. There is also a number on the side .96(don't quote me) is the correct one for small engines. The larger 1.0(something) is for the 360/390 engines.

My brother has a 75 Ford truck with a 360 and a 2150 carb. I'll go out and see if I can find any numbers on the side.

My Brother's carb is marked with a 1.21 which is 351 CFM
See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcraft_2150_carburetor
Sounds like the smaller carb's are marked with a 1.08 and are 287 CFM.
