Finally Went And Done It...

Baught a '74 Scout II yesterday. For a Scout, it's in pretty fair shape. Won't be afraid to put a few dings in it. The body is pretty good, without most of the tin worm issues usually standard on one of these critters. The biggy is the rockers and all structural stuff is solid where it counts. What I think we figured out so far:

345 SV V8 (Need to confirm)
MSD ignition module & coil (LOTS of spark. Ask Jose)
3 spd manual trans ( )
Dana 20 t-case
44's both ends (D30 outers on front. It's a Scout thing)
33/12.50x15 RVT's (50-60% tread)
New duel exhaust (Susan likes it!)
15x8 chrome spokes
Fugly camo paint job

Need to see just what I need for parts. Seems the door pulls and window cranks have gone walk about, all the rubber is missing, and I'll need to lay a big supply of nuts, bolts, and screws.

Well at least the seats are cool.. Looks like sr5 yota seats or nissan car to me. I have the leather rodeo seats still and you're welcome to them if you wanna get swanky.

Dave, just got done "researching" and I guess the u-joints are the same as waggy/chebby, so a knuckle out swap just got a lot easier!

What outers are you swapping? Knuckle out or spindle out? Doesn't Scout share spindle pattern with chevy on that axle or is it the 8 bolt spindle?

Since it's a Scout, I'm assuming the ratchet straps are truly all that is holding it together

Uh, no The full top is an added extra. It was a short top, and there's no way to hold the full top at the moment. Hey, ya deals with what ya gots when it's a Binder

The waggy front knuckles are a good upgrade.
74 was a transition year for brakes and front axles, so they came with either D30 and D44s, plus they came with either drum or disc.

If you find a 4 speed for it, either the T18 from that (and previous) year or the 75 and later T19 will bolt right in, although there is a little bit of bell housing mod required. Either way, any Scout 4 speed will work better than that 3 speed. The 75 and later came in both wide and close ratio.

Those seats really are ugly. I have a project Scout that's even worse, so I have perspective. My current driver Scout's seats are so bad that even yours would be an improvement, but I'll get them re-done or replace them. I have been told that PT Cruiser seats are almost an exact match, but I don't know what is meant by "almost."

74 was the last year for points ignitions. It is likely that the MSD is being driven by the points, although the later year electronic modules (78-80) or an earlier pertronix conversion will also work.

The pertronix upgrade is cool. I used a similar system to replace the points on my motor from Crane Cams it words very well. Super simple. I learned to HATE points over the years. . .

Yeah, with the MSD box, that makes sense. Mine doesn't have a "brain". Just a pertronix flame thrower coil, 8.5mm wires, the aforementioned Crane thingy with a stock distributor/cap/rotor. I'm not sure how the MSD is set up, but I realllly like the idea of having a rev limiter. Especially in the dunes or the snow. That's the whole reason I went with the electronic conversion thingy. 4500rpm is my max. I tend to get a little "emotional" with my right foot.

I've installed and ran pertronix one set actually went into a 63 W120 4 door tractor go figure. They work very well and are simple to install. I've heard good things about the Crane stuff too.


4500rpm? No thanks sometimes ya just gotta have a little more and I hate limits. My yota governs at 6200 but it stops making power above about 5700.
