Here I go again.....

Postby Lud » Thu Dec 03, 2009 1:58 pm

I've been dealing with a used ARB in my Jeep's front axle for almost two years now. It either stayed locked or now hasn't been able to lock in a year.
Enough is enough...
So the brown Santa brought me a new air locker for my front axle today!

Good a really good deal with free shipping from Performanceoffroad.com.

Gonna need some help. I hope this won't be too bad as I already have an old style ARB up front. Hoping this is just measuring the lash and then making sure its the same when its all hooked up.

This Jeep has 50k miles on it and I've been into both axles wayyy too many times in the last 2 years. LOL Hopefully this is it for a while.

And you are running 35's on what axles again?? Admit it, you deserve to work on them that much.

I think the selectively locked D30/D44 combo should hold up ok with the I6 and chromoly shafts front and rear.

When I go the V8 route, go bigger than 35's, or I get extensive breakage then maybe I'll be thinking dynatracs or a D44/D60 combo.

So far the reasons I've needed to tear into both diffs are due to cheap gears/possible installation error, improper drainage from the axle tubes to the diff when an ARB is installed, a old style used ARB RD30 that either full spool and wouldn't unlock or was a nice open carrier. Basically stupid stuff.

After listening to all this whnning and crying :ouin , I'd recommend going to something like a fairly stock YJ, say '93 or so, 3-4" lift with simple D30/35's on 33's, and while your at it, make it a 4 banger. Lockrite or Ausi the dif's and you're good to go....gar-in-teed! :lip:

Build things simple and overkill strong and there won't be breakage.

9's are nice but having the pinion mounted on the bottom of the diff is tough in a tj...

A nice set of waggy 44's with good spicer u joints tacked in the shafts would last decades on 35's. :D

CroMo parts in a set of thin housinged turds is a nice way to burn cash...

Took my Jeep over to my friend, Larry up in Moses Lake. He regularly puts articles in Crawl.

I brought the new ARB over with the intention of putting it in but, we finally found the problem with the old one. So now I have the old locker working perfectly in the Jeep and a brand new Dana 30 ARB sitting in its box at my house. LOL

Since I only bought it a few weeks ago, I'm gonna try and return it. If I can't (and I have a feeling I won't be able to) I'll keep it for a few months to make sure I don't have another problem with the front one.

After that, yeah I'm sure it will be posted here for sale. lol

From what I was told its a common problem in the old design RD 30. The design been improved somewhat in the newer RD100 thats sitting in my house to keep it from happening as easily.

The air passageways in the locker can get blocked up over time if the diff fluid is not changed like it should be. Since I bought it used I should have thought this might be the culprit. It actually took taking it apart and running air through it and using a pin to pick out what looked like pieces of a melted o ring inside. Took about an hour. Works great now.

Like I said I think having a backup new ARB isn't a bad thing for now until I'm sure it stays working.
