There are way easier ways to do a tranny swap.

Yep, found a true wide ratio CJ t18. Picked it up tonight. I pulled the whole mess out for a few reasons; general clean up and paint, swapping the water pump, valve cover and possibly head from my old motor, fixing my header leak once and for all, re-working the exhaust, possibly fixing my rear shackle geometry. It is sooo nice to work on the motor out of the jeep, and work on the front end with no front clip or motor.

Haha, lucky me. Turns out the input shaft was swapped for a Ford one! It's for sure a Jeep case and adapter to the Dana 20. Fortunately I can order a bushing to remedy this ...

The statement "Well, if it's torn down this far already, I might as well as ..... " came out of my mouth this morning ....

  Peanut has learned to HATE it when I say that...

So whats the plan? We talked about a fix for the shackle mounts but that didn't involve the rig being disassembled.

Don... You must be my dad's lost son. He has two of those dissembled things in his garage because they needed a little work.

Have you considered installing an OME gas tank and re-gaining your back seat? You may want to camp on the trail sometime. If so, you can't count on a Toyota guy to be around to pack your stuff.

That's a great idea! I'll give ya $20 towards another tank so I can use that cell in the race truck.

Some carnage ... I'm calling it a "near miss":

Mostly assembled and all pretty now:

Hopefully the drivetrain gets set in the frame to mock up tomorrow!

Looks are deceiving. The motor won't be sitting in there long. New motor and trans mounts on the way. Need to figure out the trans mount, then pull everything back out to finish the frame work.

Schwing! Still fits in the garage. I was worried mine would not when I bring it home, until I just saw that. :D

Looks great. 8)

All back together!! Going to the exhaust shop today. The only issue i have is the transfercase will no go into high range ... Just 4 lo and N. It's looking like I'll have to pull it out. I really hope I didn't put the bull gear on backwards ...

Thanks Danny! It's slowly becoming what I want it to be.

Got the exhaust done ... that old 258 sounds pretty good through a pair of wanna-be flowmasters 8)

Any ideas why a freshly rebuilt T18 won't stay in gear? It pops out of 4th on deceleration.

The jeep is on the verge of being sold or parted.

It just wants to go fast! It gets grumpy when you try to slow down.

I'll give ya $14.72 for it. :D

Don....dare I as who rebuilt it and how extensive a rebuild? I had a tranny in an old FORD pickup once that did that. It turned out to be worn shifting forks.

I can remember doing the Oregon trophy challance with Jimmy (riding shotty) and spent most of the run keeping pressure in the shifter to keep it in gear. Fact, I spent a couple of runs with him doing just that.

Danny, that's the D300 TCase on my Jeep. It pops out of rear wheel low. Same type of issue though with the shifter.
