Main shaft. . .IE, the part you didn't use.

<96>96 are External Slip Yokes. The external slip yoke main shaft is about 1.5" longer than the internal. that 1.5" of extra, unsupported length is one of the reasons that TJs come with a factory driveshaft vibration and that an SYE is a necessity with anything over a 2" lift on a 96+ XJ/TJ.

ZJ seats? Heated?
Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

These are the unicorn of XJ seats. . .1989 XJ Limited. Not heated. . .yet. The cold a$$ syndrome this morning may have convinced me.

I also picked up some other items to install that are less mall and more trail. More on that later. 8)

I was bored at football practice so I put in Orville's new instrument cluster with my weatherman in the parking lot. Now I have a tach and a volt meter. I have to pick up a couple of sensors for the oil pressure and water temp gauges to work.

Totally. I basically got it for negative five dollars. Yep, that's how I roll.

Tonight's mod was to install rear seat cup holders.

I installed a Spartan.locked in the front end. It goes like this:

Remove carrier
Remove guts of carrier
Install guts of locked
very carefully line up the new high strength center pin and hold the internal spacers in place with your fingers.
smash you finger between said spacer and the center pin with an eighteen oz hammer.
Scream, cry, and cuss

I'm not sure what happened next, but the locker works fine.

As it turns out, I have 3 kids plus me for an upcoming run. So, space is at a premium and I'm going to throw some firewood on the hitch rack. . .

Luckily, the ski rack that I had for the CJ when I was a kid is modular so. . .off with the ski attachments!!!!!

Small update.

Since our last installment, we discovered that Orville is NOT invincible in spite of the vast number of stock parts present. (What, stock parts aren't unbreakable???)

So, the following have been upgraded to unbroken:

Driver's front axle assembly (Danny!!!)
Water Pump ($30)
Heater Blower ($25)

Skin off my knuckles: Priceless

Honey, I have a good news/bad news situation here. . .

What is the good news?

I found the source of the clunk. . .

And the BAD news????

It is an axle u-joint and I don't like to change them (frowny face) .

BUT. . .Pablo hooked me up with a newtome front axle assembly so I'll now have one good one and one good SPARE!! Whhoooooo hooooo. . .spare parts!!

Still ISO at least a driver's side 297x axle shaft. Orville's passenger shaft has a slightly beefier looking yoke on it. . .so I think it might already have said shaft installed. Gotta throw a tape on it to see though. Anybody wanna donate?

I also need an early 90s Cherokee slip yoke. Turns out that the PO gouged this one when the extension housing broke and it won't seal up right. It is a persistent leak and it is starting to tick me off.

One more small thing:

I will be seeking 4.10 gears for the HP D30/Chrysler 8.25 and a 3.73+ Carrier for said D30 after the first of the year. I've discovered a few things about the 4.0 powerband that will work to my advantage with some of the activities that I will be undertaking.

Let me guess, that a 4.0 not only spin 5000 rpm's, but make power there too?

Had to come in and check out your build thread to see what orvilles "secret sauce" really was.

I miss my front locker already and definetely could have used it today.

By the by. . .

If I had to do it all over again. . .this thread is what I would do. Orville isn't perfect by any means and he will never be a hero, but I am having tons of fun and saving tons of money. I wouldn't hesitate to take him 98.999% of the places I took my CJ. For the other 1.001%, I don't need to go there in a station wagon.

Overall, I'm in to the project less than $3000 including buying the Jeep, lift, brand new tires and wheels and a ton of other stuff. For that, I got 15mpg towing a 2200lb trailer over 2500 miles, 20mpg on the hiway AND he will drive circles around rigs that have that much cash tied up in custom bumpers. Plus, he has 4 cup holders and connects to an ipod. :D

The popper and I are headed home so we can go wheelin' in the morning.
