Project/No Project

So. . .It has been long enough for me to go without wheelin' on a regular basis. Therefore, I found myself a non-project/daily driver. I refuse to build this rig because it is just fine the way it is. It'll wheel pretty well.
1993 XJ
4.0/AX15/HP30/C8.25
Body is pretty straight, spent most of its life on the hiway with a guy that works for the lumber industry. Runs perfect. Sat around too long so the clutch slave went out.
Cold AC
Everything works.
So, the first mod (like how I did that), is to swap the internal POS slave cylinder for an external from a 96+ model. After a very all too recent experience, I will NEVER work on another one of these piece of poo internal slave/release bearing thingies again. . .
Simple process: Bellhousing, throwout bearing, Clutch fork, front bearing retainers and Master /Slave need to be swapped in from the 1998 tranny in the CJ. It is a perfect deal since that one has issues anyway and the CJ is in mothballs.
Then, while I am waiting to finish that, I figured I'd get brown santa on the way with a lift and some little tires, some welding wire, and a set of wheels (from REALLY brown Santa). I'm also getting a cord from Radio Shack so I can hook my phone up to the stereo. I like to listen to Australian Radio on the way to work. Those accents kill me. . .
Here's where we started and pretty much where we sit today:

I agree. . but no.
This is gonna be a little fella. Getting back to my roots.
Last night, I disassembled the drivetrain and removed the hydro throwout (throw-up?) bearing and placed it gently on the ground. . .and then hit it with a 2lb hammer until it screamed for mercy.

Looks like a good mild wheelin DD. I got me one of them projects too.
Use to have an XJ, good power but horrible gas mileage (renix), like 13-15mpg.

The 5 speed is worth an extra 2-3 mpg in XJs.

It gets 22 mpg on the highway. Plus, I love to shift.
Tonight, I got the new bell housing set up with the stuff to swap it in. should go in tomorrow. All the lift and tires get here on friday.

Wow! I'm lucky if I get 13-14 with mine. 5-speed/carbureted 4-banger, 33's and 4:88's.

Yeah, well. . .I didn't believe the PO when I bought it, but then I hand calculated between here and Yakima.
No idea in town yet since it went under the knife as soon as I got home.

OK, conversion to external slave is complete!! Anybody need an AX15 out of a TJ that is in need of an input bearing retainer, shift fork and bellhousing? Could use a refresh too. . .synchros rattle a lil bit.
I'm off for a test cruise. If you don't hear from me, that's a good thing. If I start stammering aimlessly from my phone, you'll know something went wrong. . .

It works great! Loves me a normal clutch pedal.
The interwebz tells me that both brown and blue santa will be visiting tomorrow.

I don't like the blue santa. I ordered some leaf springs for my truck and the woman driver just left them in the driveway! Brown Santa has always been nice though.
Wait, who is blue santa? FedEx is the company that pissed me off. Is FexEx blue santa?

Yup, love the cherokees!

Had five of them now. Last was a 98 with 5-sp, good for 22mpg on the highway on my frequent trips over to Moscow, ID. Had both auto's and sticks. While the autos are nice for climbing in the mountains, the sticks are nice for coming back down the mountains! lol, I prefer the sticks for wheeling and for highway use too. Good luck with your ride!!

Negative. It is almost done.
It needs a little flare trimming, a few creature comforts and front recovery points. . .and a couple of stealth mods. . .
