with the changing weather I have been working on my kitchen on the trailer. i finished the stainless counter top, and am thinking about using license plates to finish the side walls on the inside of the kitchen, and finish the rest of the trim in galvanized,

probably some hard to get to camping spots, or the dunes, but i don't plan on dragging it down any tight northwest trails.

I bought (1) 5' by 10' sheet of aluminum, and 1 sheet of 4'x10' aluminum to complete the roof the grain will be sideways on the rear, but i don't think you will be able too see it, the rear will match the sides. i will need 2 more 4'x10" sheets to finish the sides

Kris. . .

Updates?

Also. . .you being a tin bender and all.. .why didn't you make the whole thing out of metal?

And. . .how big is the water tank?

What type of insulation? 1" Styrofoam?

Verdict: I love every " of this project!!!

I am definitely not a carpenter, so I am using the metal to cover the ugly.
i used 1" closed cell foam from home depot it has an R value of 5 for the 1" thickness.
i think the water tank is 15 gallons, but it might be more.
i bought the last sheet of aluminum today, and hope to get it on this weekend, maybe get it licensed soon :thu2:

updated galley Pictures, the faucet works with or without 12V power, and the spray nozzle just to the right of the faucet only works if the Pump Has 12V. I will finish it completely at a later date , right now I am trying to finish the skin so I can get it licensed

so far the total spent on the trailer is approximately $2,470.79 more than I expected, i still need to order $41 in trim pieces, and spend approx $100 to get it inspected and licensed

I have several sheets of 1/8" plywood of various finishes that would make for good interior finish paneling. Come and get it if you want it.

Can you post specs on the standard for an RV floor as far as joist separation and materials for the joists and subfloor? It would be applicable to this post as well as for reference.

There is no standard. The worst I have seen are the floors that are laminated with styrofoam between the panels (about 1.5" thick styrofoam with 1/8" panels on either side). The best use ~3/4" plywood. Most of these trailers built today use ~1/2"-5/8" OSB because it is cheaper and lighter. Look on the underside of your tent trailer and you can see how far apart they typically spread the joists.

If you really want something sturdy, take a look at the underside of a cargo trailer (B&B Enterprises or Ranch & Home). They are typically built much more durable than the RV's out there, in nearly every aspect. Personally, I would prefer to find and older cargo trailer and convert it.

RV and cargo trailer build quality seemed to peak in the late-90's and early 00's, but fell off rather quickly by '05 (they were selling so fast, the manufacturers were pumping them out way too fast and using cheaper materials). The build quality has gone up since the bankruptcy's of so many manufacturers in '08-'10, but the construction material qualities are still very poor.

where I used to work we converted a cargo trailer to a taco trailer, and you couldn't cut a hole in it for a vent without major re structuring because it gets most of its strength from the skin, and hat channels in the walls
