ScoutII build thread

Dave fill us in, and put Steve's new camera to work. Then when the Hippy is shackin' up with ya'll again, he can show you how to host & post!!!

Got a few pix of the work on the engine, and getting the trans out. It, by the way, is sitting on the floor in front of the beast ready to go to the yard to get clean, then to the gear doctor. For those of you not up to speed on this little circus, Steve baught a '74 Scout II about a year and a half ago. This winter, the pater familius (me) has been doing a few upgrades :scared: The critter has a 258 I6, T-18 wide, D20 T-case, and I have no idea what gears, altho the front is a 30. Axles are history anyway pretty soon.
Work so far (Organ doner is '84 AMC Eagle):
2bbl intake/exhaust w/ Rochester carb
Power steering w/tilt column
Relocate alternator to passenger side of engine
Mount A/C pump for on board air
Reroute hoses for water cooled intake
New water pump to clear AMC belt routing
Duraspark distributor and module
Pull trans to fix 3rd gear

Planned adjustments:
Spring over axle upgrade
Axles are D44's. Front will be a Waggy unit w/Chebby flat top knukles. Rear is out of an Izuzu and has 4.30 gears, so will need a set for the front. This will give us discs on both ends w/6 bolt pattern.

Still need to decide on a master cylinder, and how we're building the drive shafts. Other details will be argued as they come up. We have been able to get it out one evening to run around the block, and that little six may just work :wink: It seems to pull pretty hard in the lower gears!

Okay, now I'm mildly annoyed! Susan was gonna put up some pix of the Scout work, but there's no way put 'em in here without a bunch on outside hassle. So, hows come, kids??

Okay, it may be a given with everyone's schedules and project budgets that we may not be able to get to the SOA on the Scout before next fall :| So, I'd like some input from the collective. My "thought" is to build a set of extended shakles, put in some castor shims, and maybe gain enough room to get a set of 31's under the thing. Not my idea of the best way to do this, but it'd allow us to get out to Juniper and shake it down a bit.

The trans is in the Toyota for delivery to the gear doc tomorrow :o I 'spose I best get the clutch out to see what the bad news there is...

Almost forgot, while we're speaking of dragging things around, David, ya might oughta look at the pix from Ceg's little get together to see who drug who around and went home with the trophy :mrgreen: Clutch will be out in bit.

Jim, isn't this basically a Jeep clutch same vintage? I know it's 10 spline input.

This is a tricky question. . .

Jeeps, for the most part, use a 1 1/8" 10 spline tranny input shaft.

Scouts, for the most part, use a 1 1/4" 10 spline tranny input shaft.

So, it would seem, that the answer would be no, it is not. However, IH and Jeep are cousins in that you can never trust a specification. . .so I'd measure the diameter of the shaft (not the reference "nose" that goes into the pilot bushing, but the part where the splines are cut). Oh, yeah, and also. . .you DO NOT want to buy a clutch kit for a Scout unless you are ready to take out a second mortgage.

Yeah, yeah, we'll see. Just hope that little six runs like we think it should...BTW, the critter is 1-1/4", ten spline. Also 11" clutch. Got some wierd wear patterns on the flywheel and pressure plate, too...Off to research parts.

Dang, I was hoping you wouldn't see that!

My cousin is building a Scout 80 or 800, I don't remember which. He is getting rid of his Cherokee and planning on using the Scout for his offroad rig. So maybe someday we'll have a couple Scout's on the trail.

So have you had any lucks with the pics yet? I'm anxious to see the progress of the beast. :D

The hippy truck driver is here now, so I'll light a shuck under him tomorrow if I can. He may need to get to Yakavegas to get lined up on the new job...Ya'll are welcome to drop by for a tour anytime. Might even get Jose to finish the wiring before too long :lol:

Parts research not going too well. We are NOT happy with some of the prices we keep hearing :x Need to do some cross reference work. Suggestions will be considered, short of a complete driveline transplant...

That's what I did with my 258. AX15 from a TJ with a clocked Dana 300 TCase. 5th gear is NICE and if you clock up a 300, you get a better breakover angle on that big beast.

Just about to head over to Sonny's now. See what we can find in his pile. Then get the flywheel over to Auto Machine. Still no word on how the "Good ol' boy" deal on the trans is going :?
