I’m looking for a YJ or CJ7 project. I want to build a trail rig with good balance and visibility from the driver’s seat. I’m looking for a decent body and frame for cheap. A dana300, dana44s, and a fuel injected motor would be a big plus but not essential. I’ve been surfing the web regularly but so far nothing has jumped out at me. Please let me know if you guys come across a rig that may fit my build.

Their such good rigs as is no one wants to part with them.

What do you consider cheap?

i may know of a 258 sm420 dana 300, dana 44 rear detroit i believe 4.88s, open front full float rear warn kit, sagniaw ps, 35's just replaced the worn out lockrite, spring over front with shackle reversal rear is spring under

i know he was talking about getting rid of it before i fixed it (new rear hubs and replaced the front lockrite with factory spiders) probably not on the cheaper side but has some things going for it

My vote, Skip CJ-7's all together. And the D300.

YJ, 4.0., AX-15, NP231, Waggy front D44, Isuzu D44 rear, 4" lift, 35's

D300's whine, 231's are silent (and more than strong enough for the 4.0)

Maybe do a 60" Tacoma with a factory E-Locker

And swap ALL the wheel studs to 1/2" (front and rear)

My def. of cheap is relative to the parts/rig being purchased. I'm looking for fair deals for components that I want end up with. I'd be happy to check out a rig or parts if you have something in mind.

i would have to agree with jose, plus the good ol box4rocks 231/231 is super cheap and you can build the plate yourself and just buy the extra case and shaft and your in about the ballpark that people want for the 300 alone

There are only 2 plusses to the 231. 1. the 23 spline input. 2. it's made of aluminum so its case will fetch a decent price when you scrap it.

I've had a box 4 rox and while it was a nice piece if I were to do it all over again I'd get the replacement case/adapter from AA. It's far stronger than the weak 231 case and it keeps the drivetrain shorter since the adapter is built in. Plus you can get ahold of AA unlike Duffy, he's a busy man running a 1 man show so its hit or miss getting through to him. Get that case, a 23 spline adapter and a 6 planetary lowrange gear set from either a 241 or hd 231 and you'll have something that'll last. Put a 300 behind it and you'll have options for both gearing and drive selection. That's something you don't get with a 231.

Are you saying that AA makes a 231 crawler kit? I haven't seen that, do you have a link?

I'm a liar... I coulda sworn it was AA but I talked to my friend running it and its from dd machine same as the box 4 rox so again its hit and miss contacting Duffy. On the bright side its just a bit more than I paid for the box 4 rox to get a sweet piece. NWfab makes a similar unit for 3x the cash.

On an NP231 you could put a 4:1 in and a 2 low kit and call it a day.

Don't forget the slip yoke eliminator too. And once you've wheeled it for a bit that narrow chain IS going to stretch so you'd better order up a wide chain conversion kit too. Once you've spent nearly atlasII money you'll still have a weak case with a chain front output. Any more polish you want to rub on that turd?

Just look at the 241r, it has much larger planetaries and a wider chain along with a thicker case and additional ribbing. It is built from the ground up to last unlike its smaller cousins.

Not really much room behind an AX-15 for a Box4Rocks in a YJ, and Trashy, unlike the rest of the intarweb, we seem to have AMAZING luck with these "so called" weak little 231's. There's not a ton of 231 build threads around here.

Steve, as far as looking for something in the cj-7/yj relm, a 4.0 YJ will probably be your best bet. It can be white if you want . . .

remember, cj's never had FI, so if it has it now, Hillbilly Hank is REALLY proud of it.

Dave, Both Curtis and I have both thought a lot about ths jeep. It's not a good choice for what I would llke to build/use. It looks way too nice to chop and modify into a Rimrock Rig.

There's a 1988 YJ 6cyl in the Nickel for 2500.

I wouldn't bother with an '88, even for $2500, unless you are wanting to swap the engine and trans out. '88 is a carbed 4.2 and the terrible Peugot BA-10 transmission.

Hold out for one with a 4.0.
