Just thought I would share some info.

For reference, I am working with (what I believe to be) the original 1984 Dana 30 front axle in my Cherokee. Yes, it had the puny u-joints and 2-piece passenger side axle shaft, until now. I am installing CV's from a Grand Cherokee.

I scanned the 'net and found what I though was good info on the proper seal to use when upgrading a 2-piece Dana 30 axle to a one-piece unit. Lo and behold, the seal part number info did not work for me. Napa 11800 seal is too large OD to fit inside the tube without mangling. None of the other part numbers appeared to be the correct dimensions either. I researched the CR11343, 471763, 470162, 471354, and 40576S. I believe all these seals were around the 2.0" mark for OD, if not larger.

My axle tube measured 1.974" ID, and the axle shaft measures 1.18".

What I found was a seal with the perfect fit:

Part number 223050, and was readily available at Oreilly's:

This seal was an absolute perfect fit. Specs show shaft size of 1.18" and seal OD of 1.98", and it is rubber coated on the outside so it seals real well on the non-machined inner surface of the axle tube.

Beware, though. It is listed as a common seal for somewhere on the front of a Subaru engine. Do not install until you verify your Jeep is not alergic to it. :lol:

Thanks for sharing. I tried this as well.. don't remember the part # that I tried but it didn't fit.

Hey Dave,
can you explain the bushing you had machined when you did yours? Where was this installed?

Anyone see any problems with making a few drain holes in the bottom of the CAD housing for water to drain out, and leaving it un-sealed past this seal I installed?

Holes are a possible failure point I haven't ever had major issues with junk getting in there

OK, going to see how this works out:

The axle seals are now located at the pumpkin, just outboard of the bearings. I will be installing some thrifty preliminary seals near the CV's to keep dirt and grime out of the tubes.

Foam mat material:

First cut with 2 1/4" hole saw:

Second cut with 1 1/8" hole saw:

Clean housing and insert in end of tube:

Clean shaft and spray a little silicone spray lube on it, and insert axle:

Voila! Dirt and grime should stay out.

Glad you found the right part number for this Paul, I tore apart the front end on the Cherokee today. The previous owner of this front end put in a one piece axle and tried to put in a seal but it had been leaking. After pulling the carrier I found a mangled up seal that just fell out with a bunch of silicone all over. I bought that seal part number you mentioned and it went right in no problem.
