So, we are starting to collect these older "luxo" dinosaurs for pennies.
And rarely are they low mileage show stoppers...

Lets hear some of the "normal" problems everyone is having.

Dale's overdrive issue is something I never thought of, and it sounds like that may might be what is keeping Jafo in 3rd gear?

For Jarrafalo: http://mallcrawlin.com/forum/showthread ... ement-46RH

and. . .THAT site is probably about the best resource for the ZJ/WJ props/mods/etc.

Is there a way to test it before replacement?

Well. . .yes, yes there is. He needs a wiring diagram so he can jump the solenoid to see if it clicks. One way to do that is to hook up a test light to the output for the OD light and see if that works. . .

BUT. . .here's my guess:

The 46RH receives a signal from the ECU to turn the OD on/off. If it works the way that most ECU signals work, it is a ground signal. In other words, the tranny has a 12V positive into it at all times and the ECU simply grounds it to turn the OD on (or off). I would bet $$ to donuts that there is no power to the tranny plug. . .so. . .first thing I'd do is go down there with a test light and see if any of the wires to the tranny have 12V+ with the key in the "on" position.

OK.. .here we go.

He's looking at pins 54 and 55 on the ECU:

And then #37 is the light:

Backing up. . .Toby informs me that there is no VSS in the circuit. That's a big part of the issue. 8)

So, I'm gunna try something that I think will work and report back as soon as I put in the vss, since I do have the plug for it.

1993-98
some cons
main harness failure.
ecu issues
tranny cooling issues with the v8
weak trans for the v8
cv style front shafts
v8 oil consumption
windows stop working
unibody issues

98 limited-5.9
weak trans
t-case chain snapps
aluminum dana 44
wiring issues
does not like roll overs
9-10mpg :(

these are just issues ive had with mine in the past..

i had a 93 with the 5.2 had over 320k on it and i beat the crap out of it. just a cheap spacer lift and 31s i towed stuff way to heavy for it.. i really did not take care of it.. but never a issue..
had a 97 limited all options with a 5.2 and a iron rock long arm with 35s the windows quit working so i had to change out a few relays and switches. ripped off a lower control arm mount. the iron rock kit had a weak upper mount bolt on the front end that broke a few times.

my 98 limited 5.9 was my favorite jeep of all of them.. i threw a lot of bolt ons. and 4inc lift and 33s fast jeep. all leather. but i broke the tcase on a hard off the line pull.
and the aluminum center section dana flexes and takes out the bearings.
ended up rolling this one

Ok, little update. The copper bomber has OD now, went and sourced a VSS and installed it and it works like a dream, next is either a gps speedo or something else of that flavor to give me a speedo back, for now I have my phone/speedo. Oh, by the way..... I LOVE my Overdrive.
