What was Jeep thinkin'?!?

Postby Wrench » Sun Jan 12, 2014 5:13 pm

So I actually got to measuring my Waggy axles today. They are from a '91 Grand Wagoneer (for reference), Dana 44's, driver-drop front.

The front axle measures 60.5" wms-wms.
The rear axle measures about 58.8" wms-wms.

Why the ~2" difference? I looked it up, and this is the way they were from '76-'91 in the Waggy's.

The stock Cherokee axles are 60" wms-wms. Is the notorius Cherokee 44 60"? Or was it the same width as the Waggy rear?

Manufacturers typically make front wider than rear. Helps in the cornering or something

Nothing "notorious" about Cherokee axles. NT Cherokee's are the same as Waggys. WT Cherokees are 65" front, rear is probably a little narrower than 65".

If you are wanting exactly 60" in a D44 flavor look for a 96-97 Isuzu Rodeo rear. 60" wide, 6 lug and disc brakes w/ e-brake

XJ and TJ Dana 44s are 60".....

SJ Cherokee is the same as SJ Waggy.

they make the front end wider then the back to correct understeer. Understeer is were the back wants to push the front through corners.

I like the understeer correction idea, if it really is effective. I just dont like the fact that I am already tight on clearance for my shocks between the top of the tire at full flex and the "frame" rails in the XJ. :down

100% agree.

Also, understeer thing isn't really an issue with a locked rear end.

:quoi

I thought understeer gets worse with a locked rear.

Right....meaning that the staggered track is no longer an issue.
