XJ v4.0 Lift/Wheels/Tires Poll

Postby OldGreen » Fri Mar 21, 2014 3:03 pm

Just for fun.

I'll be removing the Rubicon Express lift from Will's Jeep and lowering it to about a 3" lift height. I don't want my son to start out on a Jeep that is quite so high off of the ground for his daily driver but I also don't want him to be at stock height. . .just cuz.

So, what wheels/tire size should I do? The two options are the wheels that are on it (15s) or the wheels that are on Orville (16s)

I'm looking for advice on which tire size to go with to balance drivability, teenager cool factor, and a very occasional trip to the hills to maybe run a simple trail like Kaner in the summer, but mostly just fire roads and expo wheelin'. . .

If you respond, please make a post as to your reasoning. I'm currently thinking of GT or BFG all terrains.

I really liked the 245's I had on my jeep. I used 16in Grand Cherokee rims and 245 MTR's.

While TJ Rubi take offs make a lot of sense on paper, the reality is even the newest set of TJ take off MTR's out there are pushing 8 years old...

IMO, I'd go with a set of 31" flotations in your choice of flavor on the steel wheels shown in the pic. The steel rims are going to be a tad more forgiving for that learning curve timeframe, and 31" floaties are everywhere.
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...

I agree with the 31's.

The 31" all-terrains I first had on my Cherokee fit beautiful with little fender mods. 3" lift is about perfect for them. And even without lockers, those tires worked unbelievably well; I would say they even worked better in the sand than my 33" mud terrains do (they dig awful quickly).

I just mentioned the MTRs because that's what I had. But I like the 16in wheel size. It seems easier to find craigstlist tires in 16in sizes.

But $125 for new tires like Wrench posted, hard to beat that.

Ive been very happy with my 31 x 10.5 15 goodyear duratracs. Good in the sand and snow, and great highway manners.

I chose 31x10.50x15's also anything less, lessens the "cool" factor. Having watched my young neighbor burn thru a few Cherocars the 31 seemed to be his primary choice too...

On a completely different note, why is there a for sale sign in that rig?

Pic is from when I bought it. No sign in it today. Tranny swap is today.

I'm leaning towards 31s simply because I have one brand new one in the garage and they are less than $150 each. I also had really good luck with the 31s on O and that is the suspension that this one will end up with. It clears speed bumps just fine. . .

I vote for 30 x9.50's. Because when you decide to upgrade i can get them for cheap to put on my X90 when I lift it!
