so you'll have to tear the trans all the way back down to drill and tap?

I'm hoping not, I'm planning to grease up some cardboard and try very carefully no to get any shaving in the trans. If I have to I guess I will though.

can you use a vacuum as well from the top side to collect shavings?

Well, I finally got a chance to get back to it. Got the transmission back in and took her for a drive. She runs and drives like a champ.
