Think you might want to reconsider the 8.8.
300-350hp, big tires, rocks, and a little bitty D35 pinion is a disaster waiting to happen, I'd hate to see it ruin a Rubicon run. 8.8 is a fairly easy swap too.
If you're worried about a locker, weld the dif. A weld dif doesn't drive bad and wheels great.

Why does it have to meet Cal smog? You don't live in state...

Do you know what the difference is between them? Most of the forums talk about the ranger?
I know nothing about the ford stuff, only what I have read so far.
I think you're reading something wrong because no one swaps ranger axles into jeeps. Even the ranger guys swap explorer axles in to their rangers.
Some rangers have 28 spline shafts instead of 31 spline. Rangers are drum brake.
You want a 1995 to 2001 Explorer 8.8 axle. 31 spline. Disc brakes. Right width and bolt pattern.

Being yours is a 95 it would be very easy to smog the engine. Since anything I'm talking about is the same years as the ls1 you put in. Egr and evap systems are both about the same as what you are putting in. Hell you can even run a truck (iron block) with ls injection/emissions however you'll be that 80lbs heavier which you don't want. I just prefer the truck engines if your going to build hp.......do you own the z28 by chance?
