Looks like Curtis sold his Jeep after Camp Schamp....U must have gotten a steal of a deal after his winch failed.

Lori volunteered to drive it today to get the inside cleaned out and give it a bath.

That makes it a better platform than anything I have ever owned.

quick update:

I put my old winch from Orville on it with a Warn winch plate. I don't like the winch but it works so I'll keep it while I save pennies for a proper unit. It was fine on the XJs, but. . well.

Also installed a Bikini top and I am putting my CB in probably tonight.

I've wheeled it a couple of times and it works well just like it sits. It actually makes it tough to justify a bunch of mods. It will be regeared this fall. The auto trans' super deep overdrive (.69) is useless and the 3.73s make it a bit of a dawg.

Other than that, future plans include a dog platform/cargo cover, some rocker guards and a new set of speakers. I'll get rolling on that when it cools off a bit. In the meantime, I will continue to drive it everyday and wheel it every chance I get. (The speedbumps by JC Penny. . .you know what I'm talkin' about, they are HUGE.)

Minor update again:

I continue to wheel it and drive it to work every day. It handled Rimrock and Ahtanum pretty well but the Power Steering Pump has been going out from the day I got it. Rimrock's tight twisties were just too much for it. I thought it might just be a combo of the 10" wheels and 35s stuck out so far causing leverage issues so I increased the low RPM flow by opening up the orifice in the HP line to 5/32". That helped a tiny bit but the pump was still dead. So, the only one in town was at Autozone. R and R on that deal last nigh, bled and tested. Seems to work GREAT so far. It is a totally different experience just in the parking lot at work. I was prepared to do the "West Texas Off Road" mod to the pump if I had to, but just opening up the hole and putting a new pump on did the trick so far. I will have to take it to the hills and/or to the boat launch to really see what's what. . .

Speaking of the Boat Launch. I towed my Dad's 17' Boat to Vernita and back on Sunday. My memories of towing behind the CJ got a massive throat punch. The LJ just tugged it along straight and true at 62mph on cruise. No issues. Stopped nice and straight with the 4 wheel discs. I couldn't have been happier. Plus, it looks kinda sexy and you don't need a boat launch to launch it. . .

Sweet!

I've been having the same issues with the power steering on my YJ. Opened the hole up and used lighter weight fluid, but it didnt make much difference. I think my pump is going too.

Did you put the stock replacement pump in, or opt for something higher flow/pressure?

Stocker. I was going to use a wj pump but I decided to try a stock pump first just to keep stuff simple. Works way better than the one I had so I am happy. I think I will take it wheelin to see how it behaves.

What year is your LJ? My friend Pat was having steering issues with his 05. He came to find out that they changed steering boxes on the 05 and 06 years and they are problematic. Mercedes I think he said. Not sure.
No problems, yet, with my 04.

It is an 04 and it has the Mercedes box. That would be the next step if I am not satisfied but you have to re-drill and sleeve one hole in the frame to put in a Saginaw box. I have used tons of different ones. My favorite is from an early 4 banger xj. They are super slow but low efffort.

So, I took it wheelin' to test out the new pump.

It is flawless and has more than enough power to easily turn the 35s even at idle/bound up on the trail. I don't see any need for anything other than the high pressure outlet port mod.

I have been told that a power steering box out of a Durango is a direct swap and much stronger over the stock TJ/LJ box. I have never had to change mine out yet though to find out.

Edit: Here's the specifics.
Swap only good on '97 - '02 model TJs Durango gear needed: '98 or '99, V8 engine. There is a snowplow and non snowplow package. One will be the same amount of turns of the steering wheel lock to lock, the non snowplow box will actually take fewer turns of the steering wheel lock to lock.

Stock TJ gear: Number of Mounting Holes: 3 Number of Turns Lock to Lock: 3 3/8 Input Shaft Diameter: 3/4" Line Thread Size: M18x1.5; M16x1.5 Output Shaft Diameter: 1.25" NAPA Part#: NSP277582

Durango NON-Snow Package: Number of Mounting Holes: 3 Number of Turns Lock to Lock: 2 15/16 Input Shaft Diameter: 3/4" Line Thread Size: M18x1.5; M16x1.5 Output Shaft Diameter: 1.25" Type of Hose Ports: O Ring Napa Part#: NSP277588

i know the durango master cylinder is a direct swap when rear discs are added.

I would have to either use the PSC box or redrill and sleeve one hole to use a Saginaw box. The LJ and late TJ use a Mercedes box. However, I have now had my set up on the trail and have zero need for more steering mods. The larger port fixed the low speed issue 100%. If I were to want to run 40s, it would likely be a different story. The brake master is interesting though.
