Going digital in the Warrior

Postby Lud » Sun Jun 11, 2017 6:04 pm

Switched the analog thermostat over to a digital one. Duotherm/Dometic sells a nice kit to do this. It comes with the thermostat and the digital control box that gets installed in the AC unit. Uses a lot less wires than the old unit. Very accurate. No AA batteries required.

Hmmm, looks familiar.

Lost track of how many dozens of those I have installed... :thu:

I'm sure for you they're pretty easy by now. Didn't get any instructions but you can google anything nowadays. Took me about two hours and most of that was overthinking it.

I know a lot of people get the house thermostats for $25 bucks and put AAs in them but I like having the thermostat off the 12 volt.

Not to mention having backlighting at night so you don't have to move around sliders in the dark when you're half asleep.

Other than the nifty mood lighting, what is the benefit of this? I wheel a carbureted flatty with a non-synchro manual trans, so I clearly struggle with technology :lol2
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...

Your furnace will actually heat the inside to the desired temp when it's cold out. Mine used to shut off too early. The same is true with the AC.

The biggest thing is the accuracy. Digital thermostat is accurate to within 2 degrees. Those analog sliders can be almost 10 degrees off. Mine was 7-8 degrees off. I'll have to run the heat/AC over a few trips to tell for sure but that's what I've noticed so far. Upgradability to bluetooth control using a phone app doesn't hurt either.

You also wheel an LJ with all the bells and whistles. Including the flatbiller light bar across the windshield.

-looks cooler
-easier to find replacement parts
-actually tells you what the room temp is
-actually cheaper than the older analog units
-less wiring required

The old analog thermostats were "discontinued" for a while, which meant when the thermostat failed, you had to replace the whole control box and thermostat together. They have since re-produced the analog thermostats, but not many people want them once they see the new one.

I seem to recall a certain EB sporting not only a light bar, but COLORED underbelly lighting. Hello there pot, meet kettle

Accuracy is a good thing, makes sense.

I never claimed to be old school. It's also fuel injected and has a number of other more advanced goodies ;)

I can definitely attest to less wiring. Went from 6 to 3 at the thermostat. Also inside the control box is just the AC wires. Everything plugs into the box directly from there.

Also the digital control box is less than half the size of the analog box. More airflow at the unit.
