Ammo Can Firepit

Postby tobyw » Mon Dec 19, 2022 8:09 am

Arts and Crafts day in the shop!!

I love a good smoky campfire as much as the next guy, but I have to admit the idea of instant heat, and perhaps more importantly instant OFF, does have some appeal. These ammo can firepits have been around forever, and in fact if you are so inclined you can buy one from a number of vendors, but I like to tinker so here is my take (please excuse the mess on my fab table and the shop in general, I've got a lot going on right now  )...

Started with an assortment of 3/8" black iron pipe and fittings, a brass air mixer fitting and some brass adapters, a 10' hose with adjustable regulator, and of course the ammo can:

With the manifold assembled, a series of 1/16" holes were drilled:

A quick test fire to make sure things were operating correctly:

One of the things I don't like about the commercially available units is that they all seem to have the propane connection on the exterior of the box, leaving it prone to damage and quite honestly ruining the primary benefit of this whole idea, and that is easy packing. I took a few minutes and cut out and boxed in a recessed pocket for my quick disconnect fitting to help ensure it doesn't get damaged and it keeps the packaging tidy:

Last up were some holes in the side of the can to help provide adequate airflow to the mixer valve, and add some visual appeal when the fire is burning:

Here is is all packed and ready to transport, with the propane hose/regulator coiled up inside:

And, the payoff:

Can't wait for the next snow run :thu:
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
