Operation Light Saber

Postby iaccocca » Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:20 pm

Some of you may recall that in the March meeting at Applebee’s I offered to shave my head if the club and friends of the club raised $200 for Operation Light Sabre. Operation Light Sabre is the brain child of Off-Road Adventures magazine which is the advertising arm of 4 Wheel Parts & 4Wheel drive Hardware. The money raised for Operation Light Sabre goes to buying off road lights to equip military vehicles to make it easier for soldiers to identify IEDs. Every dollar donated is matched dollar for dollar by 4 Wheel Parts and the lights are shipped to our soldiers while 4WP picks up all the shipping costs.
I have admired the program since hearing of it and I thought losing my locks before summer would not be that much of a sacrifice. Well, in researching the program before creating this post I seemed to have gotten something rolling (not José’s Jeep) and I hope the club is as excited about this opportunity as I am.
I contacted Off-Road Adventures magazine to confirm that the program is still in place. It is and they would like to offer any support they can. I enjoyed a back and forth with Andrea Friedenthal, Operations Mgr. Off-Road Adventures Magazine. She was excited about the club’s participation in their program and was curious as to why my head was chosen. I told her it is because I am pretty and you guys all admire my hair. :lol2
Then I received an email from Denis Snow, Editor/Publisher, Off-Road Adventures magazine. He wants a story and pics to be published in their magazine and, if the club raises $300, he’ll add $100 to the pot. His hope is to inspire other wheelers to join in this silliness for the support of our troops.
So what say you? Raise $200 and my head gets shorn… Vonda Smith owner of Z-Place Salon and Spa in Kennewick has already agreed to do the job. If the club raises one penny over $200, my $20 bucks that is already in the envelope becomes $30. Raise $300 and $100 is added by Denis increasing our real life support for the troops.
I do ask that the money goes to our treasurer, Sveta, or to myself (I will give it to Sveta), any checks made out to Peak Putters with a memo for Operation Light Sabre, so that the donation comes as a gift from the Peak Putters to Operation Light Sabre.
Please check out the link and read the letters from our troops. Can you imagine if our effort brought just one soldier safely home to their spouse and family?

Lee-
Thanks so much for sacrificing your locks for a good cause.
I really want to promote what you are doing. So hopefully from your action, there will be a bunch of newly bald-headed wheelers out there and a bunch of lights headed out to our troops. I’d like to get some high-resolution jpg images of your head shave (a before shot, during shot [1/2 head of hair with 1/2 a beard] and an after shot) along with a short story (200-300 words) and I’ll get it into the magazine and on our ORA Facebook page.
How about this idea? If your club raises $300, I’ll match the additional $100 with $100 which will make a total of $400 to OLS.
When are you planning on doing this?
Please keep me posted.

Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

So Lee, I guess the deadline is May 7th?

Good call José. International Go Topless Day is the 8th (my error.) And, I hope to be sporting my new look by then (for better or worse.) I hope we can go over the top at the next meeting which is May 5th, partly because my hair appointment is the 6th.

[quote]I just read the posts on your blog of people stepping up to donate—that’s great!
Some other thoughts...
How about if you send me a portrait photo/image of yourself that I can post on the ORA Facebook page to get some more exposure on this “Going Bald for Bright Lights Head Shaving Event.â€

Well if my math is right, we have commitment to $200 (at least), so bye bye hair. Now we have to get to $300 to make the match from Denis Snow for another $100.

Thanks for volunteering Steve, but I already have a pro lined up for that. If anyone wants to be photog for the event (you can use my camera) it will be Thursday May 6th at 6:00 PM. And, if anyone wants to verify the results, I'll be upstairs at the IHB immediately afterwards.
