Taking advantage of the pending break in the heat, we loaded up our outfits and headed for higher elevation Friday afternoon. Joining us on this trek would be Boyscout and Lil' Red in the ever trusty Blue, and fellow little league-rs Jeremiah and his son Lance piloting a Can Am Commander 1000cc UTV. Just as we had hoped, as we continued to roll West along highway 410, the temperatures dropped and the smoke cleared and by the time we got to our camp spot for the evening, there was actually a twinge of crispness in the air and nothing but beautiful clear sky above:

Saturday morning we awoke to somewhat overcast looking skies, and temperatures well below anything we'd seen for months. It was fantastic!! Sweatshirts and jackets were donned, hot vittles were prepared, and a grand time was had by all soaking in the lazy morning. Finally around 0900, the boy had had enough and was ready to drive. I get it...

We headed up FS-1708 and then took Upper Woodpecker to meet up with 4W-694:

From there we headed East and made our way to the Funny Rocks, where the boy was salivating at the chance to make bad decisions. I have to give him some credit though, he has a good sense of line choice and also a decent feeling for when he doesn't like it, and knows when to call it quits:

Although we weren't quite done enjoying our time at Funny Rocks, the Coors Light crowd began filtering in so we knew it was time to leave. We headed over to Moon Rocks for some lunch, and Boyscout let Blue stretch his legs a bit:

After some debate on which route to take back toward camp, we ultimately decided on taking the quickest path back to 4W-694 and then down five fingers:

Many years ago, the wife and I had explored an offshoot from FS-1708 and happened upon a rather serene lake that just sort of appeared out of no where. After a couple dead-ends, our group finally rediscovered this hidden gem and the boys had a great time taking it in while watching for fish jumping and performing some sort of dance off while on the logs. Some people's kids...

From the lake we begrudgingly headed the rest of the way back down to break camp and head for home. We were treated to a (very) few sprinkles as we were packing our tents and coolers, and with the high for the day only reaching 66*, even the ice cream at Whistlin Jacks seemed slightly out of turn. But, we were not skipping ice cream after a trip like that!! The boy was wiped out from the adventure and ended up napping most of the ride home:
