New Years +/- Run 2021

Postby tobyw » Mon Jan 04, 2021 10:15 am

For this year’s New Years +/- Run, we met up at the Maverik around 0730 in what must have been the warmest temperatures any of us could remember… The wind was howling, but it wasn’t cold at all, and there was even a patch of legitimate sunrise as it crept up over the Eastern skies. The group this year consisted of a full dollop of Wilcox +2 extra minions (and a brown mutt) in Oscar white JLU-R and the white XJ, Lenzke party of 2 in the ever-trusty Blue, OG and Mav in Ginger the red JLU-R, Dan and Jenn in the green JKU, and Smith party of 4 in the green JK-R. We rolled Westward as the winds tried to push us all over the highway, but it eventually calmed down around Grandview:

Trailers were dropped and the group assembled and aired down at the base of Nasty Creek:

The first climb was mostly bare, with just a layer of slush making a mess of the rigs as we gained elevation:

As we continued on toward “the” hill, the conditions were pretty dismal in terms of snow wheeling:

We stopped for a group photo op at the summit of “the” hill, which to our shock and dismay, happened around 1000hrs. In years past, we could have literally camped at the bottom of the hill and not made the summit by this time of day :? :

Arriving at the base of Nascar Hill, finding no fresh tracks in the inches deep snow, we decided we might as well give it a go and try to get some measure of wheeling in for the day. The poor XJ was the only rig to have any sort of difficulty, and it was in fact miserable. Winching ensued and a couple of full pulls later the XJ was at the summit, with the minions having worked admirably running cable and tree savers to get it there. Definitely think it’s time to invest in some newer tires for the little grocery getter…

Progress to the sled hill was quick, arriving there just after noon which again is nearly unheard of for the New Years +/- Run. With the wind blowing briskly chairs, coolers, and sleds were deployed and the typical BS session commenced. After some debate we ended up not starting a campfire this year, and with the winds swirling as they were it was definitely the right decision. The minions got some good sledding in despite the profound lack of snow, and we starting piling our gear back in after about and hour or so:

From the sled hill it’s just a short trip to the end of the trail where it intersects with Jackass, so we spent a few minutes making the trek and having some fun in the powder fields, as meager as they were:

The group made a quick return trip to the corrals and loaded back up around 1500hrs, certainly the earliest return on record. The trip home was equally eventful and overall the trip left us all eager to seek out the elusive white stuff in the coming weeks :thu:
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
