With more beautiful weather in store for the day, we once again took the opportunity to head up in elevation to try and run a loop trail in the Oregon high county. In the group were myself in the white JLU-R, the minion in his XJ, OG in the red JLU-R, Dryside in the white JKU-R with a freshly installed LS V8, Danny in the bright green JK-R, and Kevin in the dark green JK-R. Most of us met up at the Maverik for an 0700 launch, with Dryside meeting us at a freeway on ramp because V8 :
A quick pitstop in Dale, Oregon for some fuel for the drivers while Kevin and I stretched our legs:
We dropped the tow pigs and aired down at the bottom of the hill:
Climbing over 2,000ft vertical we found snow, and plenty of it:
Try as we might, the snow was just too unforgiving to make adequate progress toward the loop trail that I was really wanting to run, so we decided to turn back and find a good spot for lunch and contemplate our options. OG decided to give it one last try, and ended up buried well enough to snap his winch rope trying to self-recover :
With OG back in business, we found some high ground that wasn’t too soupy, started a fire and the BBQ:
After a fantastic meal and BS session, we packed up and headed for another trail that I knew of that terminates with a nice lookout to the North-East. It was about 1:30pm when we hit the first patch of deep snow on that trail:
Over the course of the next several hours, there were multiple slides, holes, trees, extractions, rooster tails, and one blown bead just for good measure:
Finally, at around 6pm, we made the final turn at the summit and were able to get out to the lookout point with the sun hanging low behind us:
We soaked in the view for a while and recalled the events of the past 4-1/2 hours, laughing about the fact we had travelled less than 1/2 of a mile in that timeframe… It’s tough to beat legit spring snow wheeling! A hasty retreat back to the bottom, with a quick stop to czek out a roadside waterfall, we strapped down and aired up, and rolled North toward Pendleton and some well-deserved warm pizza and cold beer:
Overall, another absolutely fantastic day in the hills, albeit slightly different than the route we had intended (I even went so far as to print out some maps for the group), but I wouldn’t have it any other way

Looks like another great run in the snow! I would like to check out the LS - JK, compare it to my machine.
Here, take my money....
