Single Shot Snow Run 23Apr2022

Postby tobyw » Mon Apr 25, 2022 7:08 am

Weather reports indicated extremely favorable conditions throughout the entire region, so we decided to take advantage of it and go czek out the haps at elevation. With the recent wacky weather and reported dumping of snow in the Cascades, we plotted a course to Nasty Creek and headed out just after 0700. In the group were Kevin and Earlien in their green 2-door JK-R, their boy driving his Taco and hauling G-dub for company, OG and Mrs. OG in the ever trusty Ginger the red JLU-R, and myself with Mrs. Myself in our (ok it's hers) white JLU-R:

We rolled Westward in absolutely perfect conditions with the sun already shining brightly behind us:

At the corrals, we unloaded our outfit while the others aired down and got things prepped for the trip up the hill:

The lower section was void of snow but still had good moisture content, as there was no dust, in stark contrast to the conditions we encountered a few weeks prior:

It didn't take long to find the white stuff though, and it gradually got deeper as we continued on toward our lunch destination, which was really the goal for the day:

We took the right-hander up toward NASCAR hill, and this is where the day earned it's name. With OG in the lead, he had fresh snow to claw up the notoriously difficult hill. Sadly, the snow conditions were not even remotely favorable for the next guy, with the extremely wet snow packing and chunking under any additional attempts to use the same ruts. And with NASCAR hill being built the way it is, it's nearly impossible to get outside the predetermined path so you always fall into the ruts... Even aired down to 3psi and my (OK, the wife's) MTR's providing a footprint about as wide as an entire Kia, there was no driving up NASCAR with an existing set of compacted tracks already laid down. So the rest of the group turned tail and met up with OG at the next intersection, where we carried on toward lunch and found several other similar instances where using the tracks in front of you was most decidedly NOT the right answer:

After playing around in the virgin snow on the open hillside for a bit, we went about the business of setting up for lunch, including a wonderful fire provided by Kevin and some amazing dried cedar firewood:

The company, BS session, food, and weather all combined to make one of the most epic lunch stops in history. It was simply as good as it gets, period. Sadly however, all good things must come to an end, so we packed up got back to snow wheeling as we worked our way toward the intersection with Jackass Road:

We gradually made our way back down the hill to the corrals, aired up and loaded up, and headed back toward civilization:

Just before the metropolis of Tampico, we saw some native critters enjoying the late afternoon sunshine in the meadow:

Overall it had been a stunningly perfect day with conditions you simply cannot accurately describe. Rumor has it that Darland will be open within the next several days, and with the snow we saw at lower elevations, it is definitely something to look forward to 8)
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
