Meteor Shower Overnighter 12Aug2023

Postby tobyw » Mon Aug 14, 2023 8:07 am

With rumors of a substantial meteor shower viewable above the PNW skies, we took the opportunity to gain some elevation and remove as much light pollution as we could in an effort to get the best view possible. We hitched up the little trailer, loaded a few vittles and some fresh skivvies, and headed West around lunchtime on Saturday afternoon.

As we turned off of Hwy 12 and onto FS-1500 to air down, the air had already taken a notable turn toward cool and felt good:

The pull up to the top of NF-1500 always astounds me with just how quickly you gain elevation and loose ambient temperature. It was now officially very nice outside:

We headed to our top secret location and were pleasantly surprised to find it vacant, and quickly went about setting up camp for the evening:

After a little relaxing and letting the dog do what dogs do, we took a little drive to see the sights:

Back to camp for more relaxing, some snacks, dinner, frosty beverages, and preparing for a long night of star gazing:

Sadly, my overnight timelapse didn't work and I ended up with about 600 blurry photos that provide absolutely no digital memories of the epic celestial activities. Suffice it to say however, that the show was spectacular and I'm very glad we took the opportunity to get up there for it.

The cool, crisp morning brought an incredible sunrise, hot coffee, and Denver omelets:

We broke camp and headed up Bethel Ridge to explore a new-to-us way back out to Hwy 12, via Bear Lake and Oak Creek Canyon:

It was a super fun little trail ride filled with tight turns and off-camber shenanigans, all made better with the little trailer in tow. Bear Lake itself was a little disappointing if I'm being honest, but overall it was worth the time invested:

From Bear Lake, it's several miles of nicely maintained gravel road out to Hwy 12, and we stopped at the intersection to air up the tires and get ready for the pavement pounding back home:

A few miles into the pavement we noticed that we had slap worn the mutt out:

It had been a really fun and simple 24-hours, which was the entire point of investing in the little trailer in the first place. Quick getaways with the CFO and no real purpose, or perhaps a purpose exactly like this, are what it's all about. Can't wait for the next excuse to get out there :thu:
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
