Castle Rock veers into off-road debate

CASTLE ROCK — Could Castle Rock become an ATV mecca? Councilman Mike Mask thinks it’s worth exploring.

Mask said drawing all-terrain vehicle riders to the area could pay dividends when they shop and stay overnight to recreate. He said he thinks it’s a way to repair the town’s sagging economy.

ATVs are allowed on state and county land north of town near Cowlitz View Drive but there’s no public access to the site. A private land owner, though, has told Mask he would offer access across his land as long as the city built a parking lot and installed a gate so the hours could be controlled, Mask told the City Council last week.

Mask said it makes sense to explore the idea.

Could be worth keeping an eye on. Kind of cool that at least one elected official can see some benefit to this kind of idea. Sounds like he has some fence sitters to deal with, and the lawyer's likely to be a prolem. They always are...
