I just wanted to let you know about a couple of things we’re working on at the Department of Natural Resource’s Recreation Program.

ONLINE SURVEY ASKS FOR YOUR IDEAS ON FUNDING AND ACCESS

The Sustainable Recreation Work Group is ready to roll up its sleeves and start tackling some of the issues the public helped bring to their attention last fall. Through a series of forums, the work group will address these issues and come up with recommendations for the legislature to consider next year.

The first two issues are funding and access. The work group would like your input on ideas for funding and to better understand how you find out about access to DNR-managed lands. To fill out the survey, go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Y ... raNg_3d_3d

NEXT NEWSLETTER TO FOCUS ON VOLUNTEERS

Our next issue of DNR Recreation News will be about volunteers, volunteer opportunities, training, and stories about volunteering on DNR-managed lands. We’d like to get your input this issue. We may use some of your feedback to improve the volunteer Web page for the Recreation Program.

Here’s what we’d like to know:

· What kinds of questions do you have about volunteering in general? For example, why do I need to fill out all that paperwork just to volunteer? (This will help us develop a “Frequently Asked Questionsâ€

Dear Interested Party:

Thank you for your interest and participation in the Department of Natural Resources’ work to update the rules pertaining to recreation and public use on DNR-managed lands, 332-52 WAC. At its meeting on January 6, 2009, the Board of Natural Resources delayed action on the adoption of the proposed rules. Board members said they generally approved of the rule revisions, but asked for a few additions, changes and for clarification of the section including campfire restrictions. We have made the changes requested by the members of the Board and now have the revised language available. The revised final proposed draft language is available for viewing on the department’s website through the links at:

The Board of Natural Resources packet memo contains links to each of the documents pertinent to the rule update proposal. The proposed rule language is in two documents (due to rule formatting requirements) shown as OTS 1442-4 and OTS 1957-1. The changes, which are primarily clarifying in nature, were made to sections 332-52- 001, 105, 135, 300 and 400. The revised language is indicated in redline/strikeout format.

We will be presenting the revised proposed rules to the Board of Natural Resources on February 3, 2009. Below are the date and location of the meeting at which they will consider approval:

Hi, Folks –


I want to let you know that after 5 years of hard work by the public, including many of you, and DNR staff, the Board of Natural Resources adopted the Recreation Rules at the February 3 board meeting. The new rules are now posted on the department’s Web site (http://www.dnr.wa.gov/RecreationEducati ... ocess.aspx). The rules will become effective starting March 14, 2009. For those that have not read the rules lately, I encourage you to take a quick look. I think you will find the format (question and answer) different, but more understandable. I want to pass on the department’s deep thanks and appreciation to all of you who provided comments along the way and, especially at the end, for helping us to make the rules clearer.

Hi, folks –

As promised, I am sending you a calendar listing volunteer projects the Department of Natural Resource’s Recreation Program could use your help on this year.

On the calendar, you’ll notice some regular projects, such as the gravel pack-in at Capitol Forest. We also have a list of new projects from across the state.

If any of these projects spark your interest, please contact the DNR staff person listed with that project.
