JUNIPER DUNES: Senate panel approves bill to access BLM lands
By Chris Mulick, Herald staff writer
A U.S. Senate committee has approved a bill that could help open public access to Juniper Dunes northeast of Pasco.
The bill, introduced by U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Pasco, now awaits a vote of the full Senate.
The measure allows the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to sell 622 acres of land within the Wells Hydroelectric Project area to Douglas PUD, which owns and operates the dam. Proceeds would be used to expand access to BLM lands in Washington.
There is no guarantee money would be directed to Juniper Dunes, a hot spot for outdoor and off-road enthusiasts that only can be accessed only by a private road. But Hastings believes a good case could be built for doing so.
