Peak Putters - FYBR 2012 Report
Peak Putters - FYBR 2012 Report
Since this is a standing run, I'll start out the report. There is certainly other versions that need to be shared, but here's the short version from my seat:
On the heals of the Friday crew, Will and I loaded up the XJ and headed up to American Ridge at 6:00AM Saturday morning. After some coffee and a nice road trip, we arrived at the lodge without incident. We were greeted by Lurch, Iaccoca/family, Chris/Nikki/kiddos, Dale+sibs, and Roger/Mikey. The crew made quick work of pre-run prep and we were off for the run by 9:00AM.
We made our way to the bottom of the Raven's Roost road with the intent, neigh, MISSION of summitting this year after so many of us were denied the prize last year. At this point, I gave Will a choice:
Me: Either you can drive, or I will drive FAST
Will: "I wanna go fast" ~Ref Ricky Bobby
So we launched full rally-car snow drift style up the northern route (straight where you normally go left at Crow Creek). Tim was close on our heels as we took any non-blind corners as fast as practical. Of course, we made sure that we had adequate stopping distance and obeyed all posted speed limit signs.
Where the two roads converge again, we stopped. Tim and I took to airing down and locking in 4-low while the rest of the team gathered up to do the same. Once we got back on the road, the snow began to pile up pretty quickly. By the time we got to the old sleddin' hill, we were in over a foot. Orville was still up to the task of leading, so I took full advantage and assaulted the sled hill. It took 4 tries to break through to the top, but we did it. The rest of the crew followed. Some ducked on and off of the trail to the road for the next mile or so, then we were finally faced with a series of obstacles that we were uncharacteristically unprepared for.
There were dead falls across the road! Several of them in fact. I'll leave this portion of the story to Dale and others with evidence of the fun we had moving them and/or driving over. Needless to say, we carried on to the deep stuff up higher.
No sooner had we cleared the last tree than Ed showed up to help break trail to the top. At this point, I had a feeling that my manifold pizzas were getting close to done, so I fell to the back of the pack and took my turn as the tail gunner while lunch cooked. Good thing too. . .over the next couple of hundred feet of vertical rise, we were having a tough go of it in the ruts of the rest of the crew!
In the end, a picture is worth 1000 words so as you can see, we spent a lot of time pushing snow with the bumper:
Dale is actually stuck in the background. . .where's Waldo?
Jose was riding "lap" with Lee for most of the day
Darn good lookin' kid right there:
Snow Dance WORKS!
Who was worried about no snow?
So, we headed down the hill. ..this time spending more time on the trail than off. A few stucks, a couple of tires off the bead (because of the altitude drop), not an ounce of drama and a metric S*&T ton of fun and we were back down to the Cabin. We even managed to give Lance a high-five when he finally caught the group. He was half way up when we were half way down, but he had picked up some companions in the form of a Zuk and a Land Cruiser.
Fire, food, lies (uh. . .stories), and a snorefest lead by yours truly ensued.
Sound like fun? I have a feeling that the other pics/videos will do it even more justice.

Nice work Jim on the run report. I'll get my lies, uh stories, posted tomorrow along with pics.
I think Dale's videos are going to be awesome.

Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

Well that only took 4 hours to upload... And that's after I transcoded the video and made it 73% smaller....
The run was great. Food was great. Slept like a baby. Tim's, Jim's, and my snoring kept the cabin humming. Everyone else should stop complaining. We kept the bears away....
Here's everybody at the first good patch of snow airing down:
Going up the hill was a breeze. We figured we'd hit the top at 11 and head down the mountain and run some other trails. There was less snow at the sledding hill this year, and less dogs were run over in the making of the following video.
It took a couple trys but Jim cleared the hill and built a nice highway for everyone else.
<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_x7DnJWkIMI?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_x7DnJWkIMI?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Everything was going great. Then we started running into this:
And things got better. Tim really got to break in his new winch. When it was too much, Chris helped out as well.

The fourth log wasn't going anywhere, so after it was moved as far as it would go, it was decided to drive over and pull from the other side.

After Tim got over, Chris had to give it a go just because.

And if a couple of very large rigs on 37's can do it then of course a Cherokee on 31's should be able to as well....

There were a few more trees, and more video, but I thought it would be better to get this posted this week.
We continued on alone for just a bit:
When Ed showed up with his chainsaw, just in time to not be needed. Ed took the lead, there was a break to let transmissions cool, but other than that it was smooth sailing.
And the top:
I buried myself trying to get to the top of a rather deep drift:
I'm glad Ed came along, we got to see some pretty cool trails rather than blazing down the road.
<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gfGRFFCfvyI?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gfGRFFCfvyI?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Had a little tire trouble:
But it sealed up just fine and we made it down the mountain with no problems.
Unfortunately I have a few issues onroad in 2wd. Wiped out the aging bushings in a couple of my control arms and it's a bit scary onroad at the moment. Threw some money around tonight that I didn't want to spend and hopefully that issue will be fixed next week.

Freeze Your Buns Run delivers again! And, on my third attempt I finally saw that Ravens Roost Summit is a real place.
My family and I got to Prosser about a half an hour after Tim and Chris and Nicole and family and Roger and Mikey had left Prosser.
When me and mine arrived the other early arrives headed out to hit lower Kaner. We stayed behind and set up housekeeping and started a couple fires.
That night we enjoyed the cabin, glad to be out of the rain. The rain was loud in my little home away from home pop-up.
The next morning we headed out right at 9:00 AM fearing someone would trod on our snow. We were in luck and beat all other takers. Looking at my pics, you might think we were at Ravens Roost Summit presently, but that is just the next time I took pics. (Camera problems all weekend.)
Don't do it Jim... you summited!
There are worst places to be stuck than at the top...
And as usual, we were the last one out of camp at the end of the weekend, but I do enjoy a leisurely pace.

My turn;
So I got off work get home gear up and roll out closer to 10 than 9. Run up to Naches and gas up and continue to Whistlin' Jacks. Then we forge on thanks to directions from Old Green, and on up the trail we go.
At the halfway point we caught the crew coming down on a trail off to the side of the road we were following up. We had kind of tagged into a crew of college aged kids we met at Jacks... On up to the top we went with no problems. Well that's not to say those trees you left behind weren't a challenge, we had to winch once going both directions...
What got me was we left headed down before the "kids" and chose to follow behind you that went before. Everything was going fine until we got to the stump that it seemed others had trouble getting around.
I'll get my video edited to show where, but I bit the front ring & pinion off backing up away from the stump, and limped the rest of the way out and then all the way home...

Building a capable off roader is easy, building a street legal one that you can wheel and then drive daily is the challenge...

For the record: That's not the line (on your last pic).
Ya think?
Yeah, that was my second winch pull of the day, messed up my steering a bit too, it seems taking such a line allows that turnbuckle to go to a place that throws off the steering just enough to kill the Electronic Skid Protection.
However, doing only 50 MPH on the way home I wasn't gonna be skiddin' much, especially with that nice churning sound in the front pumpkin.
No worries, the gears should arrive today and hopefully I'll get whole again on Saturday and get my Eaton in the fron too... Still it was a great trip! So when are we going to Nasty Creek?
