Peak Putters - Ahtanum Snow, April 3rd-4th, 2010

Postby commando14 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 7:05 pm

On Saturday April 3rd we met up on my dad's property on the South Fork Ahtanum for some snow wheeling. In attendance was Toby and family in his new JK, Dale in his Rubicon with brother Ryan, and their dad John in his Rubicon, Curtis, Steve, Rich, my dad, and me.

We left camp around 9:30 and headed up the South Fork. On top we headed east out to the edge of Sedge ridge overlooking Tampico.

Toby got stuck pretty good in the JK.. after a few unsuccessful winch attempts forward he starting digging.. and found some broken pieces. The front axle u-joint broke at some point.

Our trusty supervisor

I had spare shafts for the Comanche and we were hoping it would fit, but we discovered the JK has longer shafts. Toby pulled the inner shaft and we headed back down to the bottom and he headed for home. Steve also headed home.

We then headed back up the South Fork and went West up the Sedge Ridge trail... we didn't make it very far. Once we got in the trees the fresh powder and drifts were too deep to make much progress.

We turned around and headed down the other side of A2400 and down to the Sno Park

We re-grouped at the Sno Park and then decided to head up JackAss. We were moving along pretty well.. snow seemed to be a bit better for traction than the South Fork was.

We found a big drift where the road runs along the open hillside, just before getting to the top where it flattens out. My dad was plowing snow pretty good trying to get through. After getting wedged between the drift and the rocks we hooked up the winch and he pulled on through making a nice path for the rest of us.

It really started to get fun when we got on top... everyone was spreading out breaking trail. The fresh powder was deep but we were able to plow through it pretty good with big runs and RPM's :D

This was as far as we made it.. the snow was getting deeper and it was getting late so we turned around and headed back now.

Image

Right after turning around I took off through fresh snow trying to catch up to Rich.. but I hit a soft spot and sunk like a rock  Then I see Dale go flying by me and plow into the deep stuff right next to me.. he made it further than me before getting stuck. It was hilarious and made for some great pics.

My dad, Rich, and I camped for the night on my dad's property. Everyone else headed home.

In the morning the three of us headed for Nasty Creek around 9:30.

Here's some video of us coming up that second steep hill. It was ice underneath at near the top.. I tried it a few times and kept sliding back down. I backed down and got the video camera out to watch Rich give it a shot.. on his second run he made it up:

Then we had some fun on that big open hill:

We made it to where the road Y's at A5000.. it was noon and we didn't want to get home too late so we headed back down Nasty Creek and back to camp. Rich headed for home and my dad and I ran back up Sedge Ridge again looking for his favorite shovel that he lost somewhere. We look at the all the spots where he was shoveling but couldn't find it. So someone's going to find a nice 1918 short handled shovel laying up there somewhere

It was a fun weekend of snow wheeling, thanks to all for coming!
