Pineapple Express Snow Run 2-16-2014

With the recent precipitation, there was really nothing to be done other than gather up a couple of the usual suspects and head for the hills to enjoy it!!! We launched from my driveway circa 0730, after an application of burritos to manifolds. A couple of stops were made en-route to the hills, and we eventually found ourselves at the Nasty Creek corrals just after 0930. We quickly aired down, chowed down the aforementioned manifold burritos, and then headed up. The sky was clear, the winds were calm, and it was a fantastic day to be in the mountains. As we climbed, we stopped a few times to take in the views, and do some sledding. We, well, Jimmy, attempted Nascar hill but it was not to be this day, so we backtracked a touch and continued down the trail. The protection of the hillside and the trees was a welcome reprieve from the howling winds and blowing snow on the open hog backs. After we decided to call it a day and turned around, we bumped into Dave, Roy, and Quigibo who apparently also thought it was just too good a day in the snowy hills to pass up. We caravanned down the hill together, stopping for lunch and a good BS session. Alas, it was time to head home, but not after a little more sledding and general good times by all. It was a fantastic day and I hope a sign of things to come in terms of late-season moisture. On to the pics…

SNOW!!! Beautiful, beautiful snow:

This is a glimpse at the conditions that greeted us after the first good hill climb onto a hogs back:

When the snow wasn’t blowing it was fantastic though:

A little further up the hill, Gavin tried out his snowboard:

As we trudged up in elevation, conditions in the open areas got worse:

I got stuck, Jim got stuck, and Marc did an excellent job of not getting stuck. With conditions deteriorating, we decided to turn back as it would suck to try and fix anything that may let loose in weather like this:

Image

About this time, Dave and Roy and Quigibo crept up on as, and we moved down the mountain together to find a break from the wind to eat some lunch. Marc lost a serpentine belt, but it was quickly reinstalled and the downward travel was resumed. The group at lunch:

After lunch we continued the rest of the way back down the corrals, but not before some more sledding and even a little hookey bobbing. Once we were all at the bottom, we aired up:

Sadly, this was the end of our wheeling but it was a great trip with great folks, and I certainly hope to do it again soon! 8)

Looks like good times, and nice report. I love Nasty Creek this time of year. I would have much rather been there in the blowing snow than sitting here in my living room sucking O2 through a hose. Thanks for the vicarious treat.

Nice report Toby. These reports may have just put the period on my possibly running Camp Schamp. I'm heading out on Friday for a mountain run. Going up and over woodcutters pass over the Gila Mountains Friday. Will post a report on that later.

Well, my video editing skills are worse than my shade tree wrenching and my wheeling, so

Don't bother with the volume because there is no sound track other than the muffled wind/screaming 4.0L...
