Ahtanum day trippin'

Postby Roman » Sat Jun 11, 2022 6:53 pm

Short notice call for a day trip nets low attendance...

Turns out solo wheeling , while not the best idea, is pretty fun! :thu:

With everyone else not being able to make it, it gave us the ability to really take our time. Make a stop in Yakima on the way up for breakfast, extra time to load stuff from the truck to the Jeep, plenty of pit stops for photos and to doggy potty breaks.

We have first hand knowledge of the snow line. As we neared Eagles Nest a SxS came down the hill and waved us over. He told us there was a truck and trailer blocking the road about a mile up. I assumed it was a snowmobile trailer. When we got there we were surprised to see a Xterra pulling a 18' camper with all 8 tires up to the hubs in snow. He lawn darted it yesterday and set up camp. He almost had it dug out by the time we got there and by our way out they had the trailer backed out, rig unhooked and restabbing it for the final turn. Bet thats the last time he gets to camp for a long time!

Snow is wet and heavy! We went about a half mile up before I chickened out. After that we snooped around White's Ridge, then back to camp. A nap and a snack and then road trip time.

Fun way to burn a few gallons of Dino gold :scared:

So you didn't summit Darland... What else did the guy in the SxS have to say, has anyone been across the top yet?
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...

That guy wasn't pushing too hard, but after eyeballing my tires said I might be able to make it around the trailer... We just dipped into the ditch for a second and drove around the camper. The snow was wet and heavy, but the Jeep was working. I had dropped to 4 lbs, and if I went to 2 lbs it might have been fine, or I could still be up there digging the Jeep out!

With backup I definitely would've pushed farther.
