Upper door hinge for 73 CJ-5

Postby Pat Redman » Sun Sep 22, 2013 6:22 pm

I have been searching for a pair of upper hard door hinges for my 73 CJ-5. What is the deal? Do I need to fab my own or where would I get a set? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Are they for a metal hard top or 'glass? IIRC, the metal ones made by Meyers and such used an odd looking setup that actually attached to the windshield frame, and had that upper hinge jutting forward above the cowl... The 'glass tops I've seen for CJ-5's looks more like what we have come to know today, and used something pretty similar to the soft top hinges, which would not be hard to replicate. Snap a pic of what you're working with and I'm sure we can come up with something.
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...

I remember Fozzie's old 73 CJ5 came factory without a top... So def not a FACTORY part, which aren't available either... just junk aftermarket ones. :x

Easiest way that works for me is to use an off-site free picture hosting service.

I use Photobucket. Download your pics off your phone or PC there. Create albums. Copy the img tags on the pics and paste them here.

I am thinking maybe buy a pipe that the ID is that the door hinge would fit in and weld it to a tab then weld the tab to a plate and bolt it on where the two bolts for the window mount would be. Any thoughts?

You can go get a steel "spacer" I think they call them at Ranch and Home, in the back by the shackles and v-belts and stuff. . .then do what you talking about.

This is exactly what I'd do. For a fab project, doesn't get much simpler. I've built several of these types of hinges over the years, and may even have the tube you are looking for in my pile. I've also cheated and just bought gate/door hinges, might be worth looking into at some place like R&H to see what they have on the shelf.
