Dirty Burnt Stuff...

Postby TJDave » Sun Nov 24, 2013 5:06 pm

...On My Woodstove Glass.

Just a tip to share. Maybe this is common knowledge that I just didn't know....among other things.

Anyway, this works like a champ! Our 14 year old woodstove glass was so dirty and covered with burnt junk, I could barely see the fire through it. Chemicals and glass cleaners are a no-no.

All you need is some newspaper, some leftover white ashes out of the stove, and some water. 1 pre-read Tri-Power was just enough. Dip a wad of newspaper in water, dab in the white ash, and start rubbing. Keep swapping out wads of paper until all the burnt junk is off. Then just paper and water until the glass is clear.

Such amazing results, I had to take a pic. Didn't think to get a "before" pic until the burnt stuff started magically disappearing over halfway through the job.

So, that was my excitement for the day. ...and now I can see the cozy warm fire.

Good to know in case you don't plan on burning a fire for a while. During burn season, keep a hot fire and the soot will disappear. Sooty glass is a sign of a cool fire and leads to a crusty chimmey. Once the fire box is good and hot, we burn one log at a time with the cool air intake wide open..... No soot. At night, we load up the fire box and choke down the cool air intake.... Lots of soot in the morning. I burn the hot fire for a hour of so in the morning and the soot goes away.

See? Refer to the second half of my second sentence above.

Now I know how to keep dirty burnt stuff from forming again.
