Think I need a Hi-Lift style jack. Yes or no? Go with the original or is there another to consider?
Thanks,

Jacks?

I don't carry a Hi-lift and have never needed one. I carry my stock jack and some pieces of 2x6 for a footing. There is always someone nearby with a Hi-lift just dying to use it.
This was a reality last summer when I punctured a sidewall. Before I could get my bottle jack out, the guy behind me already had his Hi-lift hooked to my bumper.
I stopped him before he started jacking so I could attach an axle strap. I didn't want my coil spring Jeep to be 6 foot in the air before the tire lifted. I carry one of those.
Even with the strap limiting axle droop, it was still almost at the jack's limit.
Maybe there will be a time when I may need one, but they scare me.

I carry both a hi-lift and a bottle jack. They both have their place. But like Dave said. Most people carry a hi-lift so if your tight on space just carry a bottle jack or something similiar.
Also carry a ratchet strap to wrap around your axle so that you are doing more lifting then you need to.

You can follow me.... but it's gonna hurt
I've had my Hi_Lift more years than I care to admit. I love it and try to treat it well. But, you gotta respect the mo-fo, I'm sure it is the most dangerous piece of equipment I've ever used. (Winch is probably number two; with great power comes great responsibility.) But, sometimes, a Hi-Lift is what you need. And, it is a multi-use tool, jacking, clamping, winching, etc. You just have to respect it. That, and you have to mount it well.
Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

I like these combination jack stand and bottle jack. They take up more room than a bottle jack, but way more stable and higher reach.
