6G Bronco ABS and Everything Else Malfunction

Postby tobyw » Mon Sep 30, 2024 10:06 am

Wanted to share some insight (OE for those in the business :lol2 ) on an issue I had this weekend on my 2022 Bronco...

So there I was, neck deep in the trail and fully using the 4 part of the 4wd system. I had just climbed a sizeable rock with the passenger front tire, but unfortunately the passenger rear slid off the of the rock and I ended up scraping the outside of the wheel/tire hard against the rock as I continued up the hillside. I could feel and hear the scraping, and saw the dust cloud in the mirror as the wheel chewed against the rock face. Anyhow about 3 seconds later my dash lit up like a Christmas tree and gave me a warning, fault, error code, and service soon message for more systems than were on the first lunar lander  The biggest concern, however, was the one that said "4wd Temporarily Unavailable"... and sure enough, I was clearly in 2wd... NOT good. With more than a little bit of excessive throttle use and a few swear words, I was able to get to a flat-ish location and put the Donkey in Park, and just to top it all off I could not set the E-brake because it's electronic and was of course also currently disabled :banghead Anyhow, a quick visual inspection yielded nothing out of sorts; all of the wiring at the hubs looked fine, none of the harnesses around the chassis or axles looked disturbed, and nothing in the engine compartment looked out of place. With nothing else to even consider trying, I cycled the ignition a few times to no avail. Then I disconnected the battery and let it sit for a few minutes. Low and behold, upon restarting, all of the malfunction indicators were gone! However, still no 4wd, which let's be honest, is what I needed the most... Again with nothing else to try, I cycled the ignition one last time and like magic, 4wd came back and I was underway. :? :?

So what happened here? Well, my best guess is that the rock chewing allowed some debris to get into the ABS sensor and it freaked out, causing pretty much a complete vehicular failure. We've all had a similar issue with the much maligned Crankshaft Position Sensor failure on 4.0L Jeeps... Thankfully it just took a Ctrl+Alt+Del maneuver to get things back up and running, but it sure has me leery of a bigger issue hiding somewhere deep within the Donkey.

Long story short, if you've got a newer Bronco and experience something similar, my advice is to pull the battery cables, take a few minutes to chill out while things reset, and try it again. After some reading online it seems this isn't entirely uncommon, it's just part of doing business these day
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
