I can agree with you on the first part that it is silly to go through the trouble of adapting that trans to a gm engine but if any of that setup is inferior it's the light duty trans. Toss that turd in the trash and slide a th350 behind the superior gm engine with a factory np208 t case adapter for the 300 and it's done right and cheap.

The 999 is AT LEAST as durable as any TH350, and a little almost no cost upgrades will make it better. It's even well adapted to offroad use, as you can get the really low first gear and lockup is available in the top gear. All with no fancy electronics.
No, not all 999's are lockup, but I do believe you can stick any lockup version where this one is, if it isn't. And, wrecking yard 999's are often available for peanuts.
If the 999 has any weakness, it's a relatively small oil capacity, which can be increased with a deep pan. If I were using one in a Jeep, I'd install a shift kit for more positive shifts, and also put in a really large atf cooler, and a filter system on it. That's not just for the 999, but for any auto equipped off road rig.
