Rimrock Zoo

It had been awhile since I camped at Rimrock. Is it me or has Rimrock turned into an absolute zoo?

My family and I went down there to camp for the weekend. Our first night was quiet and after that it was all crazy. All we wanted to do was take our 3 y/o son on a fun quality camping trip. We camped at East Point on the Peninsula the first night. The next morning we talked to the people on the other side of the point and they were leaving and said we could have their spot, fire, and fire wood. So we made the move and thought we had a killer camp site. About an hour later these kids show up. They park in the parking lot up above, look around, and then commence $h!t talking. They didn't think we could clearly hear their conversation obviously. They started flipping out because the thought we had taken their fire wood from the previous weekend when they had been there. They just figured it would still be there or something. Then they decided they were going to park in our Jeep.

I turned to my wife and told her that I think these people are going to be bad news and that its people like this that really make me want to get my CWP and carry. Not more than 2 minutes later I look up to the parking area and the two guys have rifles and they're staring at us. Holy crap, I $h!t bricks. I couldn't tell from that distance that they were just bb guns until they started shooting at the chipmunks. Of course in shooting at the chipmunks they were also shooting in our direction and general area and they clearly didn't care. They moved down the beach and then started to stomp on and shoot the frogs on the beach. At this point I was furious and my wife forbid me from talking to them for their safety.

She went over and told them that if they didn't stop she was going to call a Ranger. Of course they didn't know we got no cell reception. She also told them that they had better not park us in and/or mess with our car. They said they didn't park us in and were full of excuses for what they had said earlier. Shortly there after I took my son up to go to the bath room. The bathroom had been clean before they showed up. They had peed all over the men's bathroom. My wife told me shortly after that they had smeared $h!t all over the girls bathroom. Wonderful new neighbors huh?

The cows ended up coming down just behind our camp to get some water from the lake. Awesome opportunity for my son to get a look at some cows. He loves farm animals. So my wife goes to take him over to look at him and I start hearing BB's hitting the trees around the cows. Again, they decide its okay to shoot in the general direction of my family, but quickly cut it short once the realize that I've locked onto them. They just stood up there smugly and said, "bang bang". It took every fiber of my being not to go up there and give the rangers two fresh bodies to pull out of the lake. The rest of the day the two asshats and their equally retarded girlfriends ran their mouths and loudly droped F bombs right in front of my kid as they cut back and forth through our camp ground to get to the water. You know, because it would have taken 30 seconds longer to just walk around our camp or they could have just jumped in the water in front of where they camped.

That night they proceeded to bump their music loud all night long keeping me up all night. It sucked running on no sleep the next day. They were gone most of the day. Saturday the area filled up like crazy. There were people every where. We watched god knows how many near boat accidents. I've never seen Rimrock that crowded before and I've camped there quite a bit.

We ran into an older couple who, amazingly enough, liked to wake board. They needed one more person to wake board and asked us if we wanted to go. So Caden got his first boat ride. We hung out with them for most of the day and had a blast. It was cool to make a couple of new friends. By the time we got back to our camp we had a whole family reunion camped right behind us. They turned out to be some of the most cool respectful people we've ever encountered while camping. Things were looking good.

That night the asshats decided to be loud and disrespectful again. They had a fire that had flames at least 7 feet high and spewing burning floating crap all over they place. Of course it was fueled via chopped down branches and gas. They decided that it would be a good idea pop all their doors on one of their cars and bump their music as loud as possible. This time they had more people than just us to piss off. They had a couple people both ask them nicely to stop and informed them of the rules. They could have cared less though. Finally at 11:30ish I had enough of their crap, decided to disobey the wife, and went over to their camp to have a chat with them. One of the kids told me that the other kids dad was a cop and that he said they were still in the right. They were obviously scared shittless as I made it clear that didn't give a damn who their dad's were and I didn't back down. I informed them of the rules that they had been breaking and that I was absolutely sick of their $h!t and that they had better not give me an excuse to come back up there. My phone didn't work well out there, so calling a ranger was out of the question. My wife's Jeep has an ignition interlock and we had a little bit to drink, so it would have been down right stupid to try to drive and we couldn't have started the Jeep any way. I was hoping that they'd be scared shittless enough to drop their disrespectful ways.

Fortunately they saw the light, turned their music way down, and kept the noise to a minimum. Not bad considering I'm probably the worlds most harmless person. Either way I couldn't sleep for the rest of the night.

I couldn't believe how much of a zoo Rimrock was. It was absolutely crazy. My son had a good time and that's what really mattered. He still wont stop talking about his boat ride and meeting Nancy and Doug. I'm just glad he had fun. I cant wait to get him out more, but I think we'll be steering clear of Rimrock until the off season when no one is stupid enough to want to camp up there.

Does any one else have any suggestions for a nice low key place to take the kids camping? I really don't want to deal with idiots again. I don't mind people, but the less people the better.

Both Little Naches and Kaner Flats Campgrounds are pretty low key for the most part. Bottom Line: If you want to camp in a "camp ground" you need to go to one that has a camp host. They typically cost around $16/night.

For me though. . .camping in a campground is like pretending to be homeless. I prefer to camp remotely in the National Forest. Alone or with ONLY people I know.

BTW: In your situation, I would have found a LEO before a beer had been cracked or talked to one of the other neighbors to help you find one. I've seen some gnarly stuff in campgrounds involving weapons. You are better off getting the LEOs involved.

You are right, camping in a campground is like pretending to be homeless. We just wanted to be be near the water and in a place that Caden could enjoy. Our spot would have been perfect as far as a place that we could play with Caden and let him swim if it were minus the idiots.

I personally love camping remotely, but my wife wouldn't let me take her Commander that far back in the woods if her life depended on it. I told her that when we replaced the tires on it (which happened just the other week), we needed to drop a 2" lift and slap some 32's on it so that we could get it back in the places that the people in their little cars couldn't get to. It certainly would have solved our problems this time, but we really did want a lake or some place for Caden to swim. After all, we just put him through swimming lessons. Robyn was horrified that I suggested we lift her Jeep though.

There is a Commander here in town with JK Rubicon wheels/tires on it that looks pretty darn good.

There is a really nice swimming hole at the Little Naches campground. The water isn't fast at all:

You're going to have to show me where that is at some time. Slow moving and shallow makes me feel a lot better. Caden isn't much of a swimmer. Okay, hes not really a swimmer at all, but we're trying. lol Hows the views at that sight. A scenic view is always a plus.

We're thinking about putting a hitch and brake controller on the Commander to pull a tent trailer. We learned that camping with just one kiddo means packing half the house and that when you can easily spend half a day setting up and tearing down, then you're hauling way too much stuff.

What size tires are the JK Rubi's running? I love the rims. I'm guessing 32's based on what I've seen, but I haven't looked it up yet. I wonder how cheap I could get some take offs for.

255/75R17s (32.1"x10").

You can get new ones on rims for about a grand.

However. . . I'd recommend keeping the stockers and switching out to the Rubi treads only when going to the woods. She'll love you for it.

That's exactly what I was thinking. She just bought new tires and would complain to no end if I said it was time to get rid of the new tires and get another set. lol A camping only set of tires might fly though if they're cheap.

We've been out to go camping when there was still snow on the ground before we has the Commander and it got a little crazy. I personally would like a little more capability out of it just for those nasty conditions that we some times encounter out there. Its really just a DD/camping rig, not a wheeler.
