A few years ago, the Sierra Club was asked if they would change their stance and support civilian nuclear power if all of the technical issues they cite (e.g., waste disposal) were to be successfully solved.

Their response? "Absolutely not."

And why not?

Because cheap, safe, abundant nuclear power could "lead to excessive economic growth".

In those precise words. Excessive economic growth.

You couldn't make this stuff up.

Arrogant, cloistered limousine liberals. Who are being passed by by the rest of the world at a steadily accelerating pace.

For someone sitting in a Third World slum without reliable electric power for things like refrigeration and nighttime lighting, dire warnings of "excessive economic growth" ring awfully hollow.

But the Sierra Club would prefer that such unfortunates continue to live in squalor. Endure your penury patiently for the greater good of Gaia!
