Hey i have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with the 5.9 motor in it. The tranny recently went out and just found one that came out of a 98 with a 5.2. Are the trannys the same? I figure they would be but just want to make sure.
Thanks
Kevin

No, they are not the same...

Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
Just chiming in because I love looking up weird stuff like this...
I've read of a few people in Jeepforum.com with 5.2Ls and 44RE from 1996 to 1998 (93-95 5.2L trans won't work as they have a 46RH) Grands swapping in a trans from a 1998 grand with the 5.9L. Supposedly you can ONLY do this with a 1998 46RE. It's a sought after upgrade for the 44RE because its a DIRECT bolt in.
Because you have a 98' Grand with the 5.9L I would think there's a possibily you can go the other way from the 46RE to the 44RE in this case. I've heard the 5.2L ECU will recognize the 5.9 46RE trans no problem but the other way around...I'm not so sure.
That all being said, the transmission you have is an UPGRADE from the 44RE in the 5.2L. Now you could look into rebuilding the 46RE or even adding 48RE internals (from the Diesel Dodges) into the 46RE to beef it up.
Oh I also added a post over on the ZJ forum at Jeepforum.com to find out for you. Might as well find out. Looking at getting the future wife into a ZJ or WJ in the future...
Edit: So far sounds like it will work, but you're putting a weaker trans in.

Alright sorry have been busy and have checked here lately. But it is a 96 grand cherokee limited with the V8. And i am still looking for a tranny for it. So if anyone knows where one is that would be great. Trying to fix my aunts rig for her.
