Currently, my only personal vehicle is my TJ. I don't like not having a backup, and it's becoming more and more clear to me that having a wheeling rig that can perform a highway role is a whole lot of work.

I'd like something with a bit more hauling capacity than a TJ that can be used for reliable highway driving.

Of course the obvious solution is a cherokee, 4runner, exploder, or even better - a grand cherokee with full time 4wd....

However, what I'd really like to have is a full size jeep truck (J10, J20 etc...). First off, they're just cool. Second, a truck bed is hard to live without, and the potential to haul a trailer or add a camper at a later date is very tempting.

I figure that with my bad luck with vehicles (something random that should be solid usually breaks) I'll have just as much maintenance on an old cherokee as an even older jeep truck.

Opinions? Am I asking for trouble? I'm open to any kind of input.

The J-trucks you are finding are cool and might make cool tow pigs with some work, but if you need a daily driver the Grands get my vote. Really depends on what you are trying to do. Any nearly 40 year old truck (is my math right?) is going to be a project. IMO

How much you looking to spend? I would lean towards a 3/4 ton or bigger full size (if you plan to haul a camper) from one of the big 3. My preference is powerstrokes 95-02. But I'm kinda bias

Yeah, it's a decision between the smart choice and the painful choice. The grand really fits in for most of my wants but I don't need a daily driver at the moment so much as a backup rig - or something to make the longer trip into town for supplies, ect...

Don't really have the budget to spend more than 4-5k. And thats a good point about the 3/4 ton stuff. I'm a bit leary of a J10 for pulling a camper/boat, the J20 with a dana 60 and bigger brakes would certainly be a better option.

Diesel would be great, and I know the powerstrokes are good trucks. I think I'll include them in my researching. I just need a Jeep Truck body and a powerstroke or dodge diesel drivetrain and it'd be perfect.

Dang, If I had the cash and If they actually put one into production I'd definitely pick up a JK-12.

I once picked up a 95 F250 powerstroke for about 5k. With the price of diesel moving up like it was then you may find one in that range.
