5x4.5 to 6x5.5?

Postby bobracing » Wed Nov 13, 2013 7:17 am

Kind of thinking out loud.

Anybody change Jeep wheel pattern of 5x4.5 to 6x5.5.
Back is easy, re-drill or buy axles with the pattern.

Front???
I read where you can use Chevy unit bearing on a Dodge 44, they are both thru holes so a nut is needed.
Will Dodge D44 knuckles fit on a D30? Old school swap out but not sure about the new.
Are the spline counts the same?
Chevy rotors, Dodge calipers? or are they the same?

Am I missing something else?

Yes, could do a kit swapping over to tapered bearing but that is $1000+, 44 or 60 could be swapped in for that price.

Why 6x5.5? Why noy 5x5.5 like older d30s? Maybe old 30 knuckles will fit new inner C's?

Almost all my rigs are or going to be 6x5 1/2 and a different option has presented it's self.

If this is for/into a YJ/XJ/ZJ than an axle swap is going to win out...

Love me some Waggy axles!

Looking more for a DD/light duty wheeler and something to replace the Blazer. Some runs I go on are an afternoon drives or limited by the group of wheelers I'm with and would just like to drive to and from, not trailer.

I like the Dodge knuckle/Chevy Unit Bearing and Brake idea a lot.

The other option is to knock off the inner Cs and replace them with D44 stuff and run D44 outters ala chevy/waggy.

I'm gonna assume Cherocar...

I used to think this set up was super cool, but it ends up being narrower than the D30. No good. And now that shops make weld on bracket kits to put a Waggy D44 into an XJ I don't think the fab work is worth the results...

Balistic Fab brackets+Waggy D44+regear/locker= bullet proof XJ fun!

Which one is narrower? The unit bearing option or the tapered bearing/hub option? Interesting. . . .

Pst gm.....cheaper than wago....swap and sleeve to make driver drop thicker tubing plus brackets and possibly find 4.10s also 6 lug more time but cheap as well and better off in my opinion....JK gears with a jantz kit. Ultimate beef.....and you get exact deminsions that fit your exact needs

No.. .not slow. I just didn't care at the time.

I'm semi sorta interested in a 6 lug D30 if a Taco rear comes along. . .but only semi sorta. As far as a D44. . .maybe one of those instead. Good to keep your options open.

James. . .It would be awesome for me if you did the Dodge/Chevy unit bearing shuffle.

GO!!

Derail...

Jimmy, a 6 lug/D44 outter'd(1/2 ton brakes/spindles/bearings/hubs/lockouts)/D30 saves you about 20 lbs(at the MOST)

Then you still have a weaker housing...

Barked up that tree and Trash steered me the right way!

YJ/XJ/ZJ D30 NOT worth it. A D44 belongs with a Toyota rear! All those Tacoma kids CAN'T be wrong!!!

Yes...I'm sure you are right. Reality is that I will most likely just regear my current axles and call it a day. I have no complaints that are worth the hastle.
I still wanna see James' 6 lugger
