So I've been scoping out a 97 TJ with a hard top that's got a bad auto tranny in it. windshield is broken, a/c clutch is bad and radiator is bad but it comes with a new one. carpet is trashed but it comes with a new carpet kit. appears to have a 1 inch body lift to fit 50% 33s and is supposedly locked front and rear with detroits. body is in good shape w/o any rust or dents that i can see. might be able to pick it up for $2800, is it worth that is the point of this thread? it would an as is where is deal.
post up your thoughts.
anyone have a spare tranny for cheap?

Doesn't sound bad but I can fix all my own stuff. I would call a wrecking yard and see what another Trans would cost.

If I can find a 4 or 5 speed for my new yj that I picked up I could part with my 727 torqueflite for a reasonable price. It's behind a 360 amc so I know that it will fit a 4.0. The wife and myself have always ran sticks so we're not sold on the auto quite yet.

I'm surprised you found a transmission. They're a little hard to come by for that year. I swapped in an AW4 in mine when I couldn't find one for decent money.

Not too difficult, though there's a bunch of wiring involved.

I've got an SM420 and an SM465, if you're primarily building a trail machine. Both require rebuilds, I imagine.

not looking at modifying it too much. more looking at replacing broken parts and flipping it. i've found a 32RH to replace the original. apparently the automatics for this year are specific to '97s only. owner says it's a '98 but with a 12/96 build date i'm thinking it's probably a '97. VIN also reflects a '97.

If your just gonna flip it I would find the correct wrecking yard unit and bolt it in. A lot less headache worrying about wiring and such.
