Deep Creek Construction Closures

Postby Grumpy » Mon Jun 13, 2016 10:11 am

NACHES— Deep Creek Trailhead construction work to improve trailhead parking continues on the Naches Ranger District. Construction will take place weekdays, Monday through Thursday, from July 11-28. Forest visitors can expect Forest Service road 1808 to be closed Monday-Thursday through the duration of the project.

The closure will be in effect at milepost 18.5, approximately 4 miles before Deep Creek Trailhead, and restrict access to Copper City and Deep Creek Trailhead. Access to these areas will still be open Friday through Sunday.

“The closure is necessary to promote public safety and to expedite completion of the construction,” said Naches District Engineering Contract Administrator Larry Miller. “Heavy equipment and several large trucks will be hauling materials up to the trailhead for the project. It is important the public stays clear of this area during construction to prevent accidents and injuries.”

Deep Creek Trailhead improvement work is part of a three phase project to replace parking areas that were destroyed during floods in 2006. The first two phases have been completed by replacing destroyed parking for stock camps approximately 1 mile from trailhead, and lengthening spurs in the area for stock parking. The last phase will replace the parking area at the trailhead for passenger and stock vehicles.

Currently, trailhead parking has been congested due to shared space between passenger and stock vehicles. Improvement work will restore the parking area to accommodate previously displaced stock vehicles and provide a new vault toilet at the trailhead.

Secure Rural Schools Title II funding was used for environmental analysis for projects and the first two phases of the project. Funding for this final phase was provided by the Recreation Conservation Office, Non-highway and Off-Road Vehicle Activity (NOVA) small grants program, and proceeds from the Northwest Forest Pass program. Volunteers from the Backcountry Horsemen of Washington and Backcountry Horsemen of Central Washington also played a critical role in providing their time and support of the project.

Forest Service road 1808 and Deep Creek Trailhead are expected to reopen for daily use on July 29, 2016. Small projects are expected to continue in the area after the road re-opens but they will not impact access to Deep Creek Trail.
