i rebuilt the motor in my 1979 k1500 with a 400 v8 i never saw the engine when it was complete so i wasn't able to mark anything if anyone knows how to set the timing up please please reply to this or heck call me at 360 929 3599 i have tried putting the engine at top dead center, checking for spark and so on but im sure im missing a step or not doing it right if you have any ideas or suggestions i am totally open to them as this is the last thing i need to do to be driving my 4x4 project that i really want to drive

Can we assume the rotor is pointed at #1 when the engine is TDC? If so, and you have fire and fuel, it should go...Lurch?

Pull the water pump and timing cover back off and point the timing marks on the cam and crank gear towards each other. Put it back together and start it.

It's highly possible that you have the timing 180 degrees out.

Ok, so I guess I read way more into that than was asked.... Put the crank at 0* on the harmonic balancer and drop the distributor in with the rotor pointed at #1. If it doesn't start it very well may be 180* out....

the rotor is at the #1 position and im on tdc, i cranked it till the battery died and then when i swapped in the battery from my roomates jeep which is the same size and cranking amps as the one in the truck none of the electrical works at all now, could i have some kind of electrical problem?

Are you at TDC of the Compression stroke or the exhaust stroke?? common mistake for people to make... as for the electrical yes you can damage things by cranking until they die. Trace the path of the power from the battery and find out where it stops.

Did you accidently hook the battery up backwards? It could be possible that you have a bad connection at the battery or a poor ground.

Does it have spark and fuel? Need more info. Just because it cranks over doesn't mean a thing. . .it is remotely possible that you have your shizzy hooked up backwards, but the reality is that you probably fried your ground wire or your main hot lead or your starter switch or solinoid from cranking it so much. Spend some quality time with a circuit tester or ohmeter to find out where the breach is. It is NOT likely that you fried everything. Once you have replaced the offending circuit and replaced all of the big cables. . .

1. Verify that you get a squirt of fuel when you mash on the accelorator pump.

2. Verify that you have spark (pull a wire stick a screwdriver in the wire, set it on the block, crank the motor, and see if you have spark. If not, do a tune up including a coil (I like my pertronix flame thrower).

3. If #1 and #2 are OK, then you are probably 180 out. Means that you are on #1 TDC on the Exhaust stroke rather than the intake stroke. . .even then it should at least sputter.

More obvious things: make sure you have the firing order correct. make sure the fuel pump is pumping. make sure at least one hole has compression. carefully dump a little fuel using an empty session bottle down the carb. . .then try again.

It is just a chevy. . should run with the beer bottle and hotwire even if it is completely broken. . .

ok i was 180 out because im retarded, i got it to fire for a moment a couple times but then sadly my starter fried on me. if anybody has a starter for a small block chevy they would be willing to sell or trade for i have a winch and a little and some cash, again my phone number is 360 929 35pp or my email is hotredstang@msn.com im willing to pay a fair price or the winch... ...budgets are usaullay all that stands between you and your dreams.... ....budgets suck

What winch do you have? I'll be home tomorrow and I could grab a starter easily enough if the winch is what I'm looking for.

45 or 50 bucks for a Chebby starter, 20 for the core, so 30 ballpark. Keep your winch that way

found a starter for 10 thanks for the info the winch is for sale for 80 bucks and or a tank of gas it is a older warn winch model 6163 ive never seen it work but then again ive never seen the truck work im guessing from the looks of it its 8-10000 pounds hit me up if interested you can come try it i believe all you need is a battery and a ground i am looking for a newer winch but i would be very VERY interested in a trade for tires 33x12.5/15 or rims/tires that fit chevy 6 lug whatever
