Need bolt removed for rear driveshaft u joint straps....

Postby Lud » Wed Sep 03, 2008 7:47 am

Don't want to give away to much of the carnage of the run last weekend but I did a good job shearing a u-joint strap bolt off on the trails on Monday. My Jeep's front wheel drive right now. :)

I've tried to get it out but don't have an extractor to take it out.

I'm picking up new straps and bolts and already have a new u joint for the rear drive shaft. Does anyone have an extractor or better yet have any time to help me out with this? I'm off during the day all this week.

I have a set sitting at home but I'm currently in CA now...

Do yourself a favor and hit sears and grab a pack of them and keep them in your rig... Best money you'll ever spend next time that happens out on the trail.... And you KNOW it'll happen again... Unless you convert it to u-bolt. Then it'll break but be easier to replace.

Weld a nut to whats left of the broken bolt. It should come out pretty easy.

The bolt is actually sunk down in a little.

I'm not home until late Saturday but could help you then or Sunday. Or, if you need access to my garage/tools I can get you in.

Well I bought a set of "easy outs" and titanium drill bits. It's not as easy as advertised. I've been at this all morning and I cannot get this bolt out. I've gone back to a hammer and chisel to see if I can make any progress.

Heat it with a propane torch so you can melt that locktite.

Good idea. Hey here's some irony. The pinion yoke I have is a 1310 style for use with u bolts. Sure enough its drilled all the way through. lol :D Wish I would have used them to start with. They have them at Six States for 7 bucks. Guess I'll take the straps back and get those.

Got it! Woohoo! Went scaveging through a couple of bins of tools my dad gave me last year and found a propane torch that fits on the Coleman propane tanks I have. Heated it up, tapped it around with a chisel and hammer to move the bolt out far enough to grab it with a pair of pliers and turned it out.

Six states gave me the wrong u bolts though. :x Gonna have to go back again and then maybe get some straps if they don't have any that fit or go online.

That is a super common u-bolt... The caps on a 1310 are only 1 1/16" which is super common and easy to find.. I'm guessing they gave you some U-bolts that are 1 1/8"? That's the other common size.....
