Whats wrong with my jeep

Postby CopenhagenCowboy » Thu Apr 29, 2010 4:38 pm

it has been running horrible lately, its painful to drive. i cant let off the accelerator or else it dies. it drives like it never warms up. i have a feeling its a carb issue but i don't know what to do short of buy another carb and i can in no way afford that right now. at the moment the only vacuum line hooked up is the vacuum advance from the dist. the rest are capped off on the carb. thanks guys :banghead

What you've got is a Carter BBD. . .please throw it in the trash.

If you don't want to do that, you can TRY to remove the "stepper motor" from the loop. It is the thingy with the wires on it that bolts on to the carb with like two screws. Effectively remove it from the loop by unbolting it, putting something over the hole that will seal it (I think I used plastic) and putting it back on without the wires plugged in. This probably won't work, but it is FREE and worth a shot.

Do not put one single penny into that carb. Trust me.

When the above doesn't work:

Run, don't walk, to Dan's garage next to twin city metals along with the gasket from your old carb and get yourself a Rochester 2G from something like a late 60s Chevy truck with a 283...don't pay more than 30 bucks (try for $20). Make sure the flange is the same (this is why you brought the gasket). You may try and talk him out of an air cleaner housing and stud while you are at it.

Then, go down to schucks and spend another $20 to 30 bucks on a rebuild kit and a shiite load of carb cleaner.

Install said kit on said carb while cleaning the heck out of everything. Yes, do it yourself. Take pictures of where everything goes before you uninstall it. Don't bend anything and don't loose anything. You will end up with extra parts. . .don't worry. Even go as far as looking on the internet for pictures of a 2G.

Now, if you got one off of a 283, it shouldn't need re-jetted or anything. Just turn the Idle screw all the way in (the one with the spring) and then back it out exactly two turns. . .read all the directions that come with the kit, but realize that carbs are simply toilets for air. . .so don't get too carried away.

CHOKE. . .No worries. . .you don't need no stinkin' choke. Just pump it a few times and fire it up. You might have to run it a little fast until it gets warm, but don't get too fancy.

So. . .for $20 to $40 you can have a carb that works 42x better than the stocker and you'll be the envy of all the posers that ran out and bought crappy webers and motocrafts.

Now, once you get it running right. . .start saving your money for something fuel injected. . .

That post right there is worth the price of admission!
Listen to Jim on the Rochester 2G...
Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

The other option is to get Commando to go steal a 2G from his dad. . .they came stock on the buick V6 back in the day. It might run a little lean depending on how it is jetted, but it would prolly work.

Make sure you keep the throttle linkage from the BBD so you can pirate certain parts to make it work with the 2G. IIRC, the throttle on the BBD pulls straight down instead of back so you need to figure that out. I did it from spare parts I had in the garage.

2G = Happy engine. Got one on Steve's Scout, and while it was drivable ( ), it ran like a champ...

I'm running an old manual choke 2G on my 258. I love it.
