Ultimate KoH Watch Party 07Feb2026

Postby tobyw » Sun Feb 08, 2026 10:48 am

In what may go down as my best bad idea in history, I devised a plan to watch the 2026 King of The Hammers event at elevation... Since our winter thus far has failt to show up, it only seemed appropriate to pretend it's already spring and go camping. Turns out, the event coincided with Chef Marcus' birthday, so at the end of the day this sort of had to be done regardless

We launched right around lunchtime on Friday afternoon in typical grey, misty, February weather. As we rolled Westward, conditions steadily improved until we found ourselves at camp under nearly bluebird skies:

Ground conditions were admittedly sub-par, but we managed to find a suitable chunk of high ground and went out our business. We spent the afternoon soaking in the weather, and as darkness fell we dined like kings:

Since it was Chef Marcus' birthday, I whipped up a quick celebratory cake (OK OK, I brought it from Yoke's  :lol2 ):

We spent the rest of the evening around the fire doing what friends do in such a scenario:

The morning was chilly, just below freezing, and with it came the thick fog we'd left behind the prior day:

Weather be damned, we had a mission, and that was to watch the 2026 KoH event. We started in open air, but as the weather moved in and turned to a steady rain, we ended up deploying the Not-So-EZ-Up and propane fire pit to stay warm as we watched the action:

As the race unfolded, it became apparent that this year's event was going to take substantially longer than in years past. Normally the top finishers are back in camp by early afternoon, and that is what we had planned around... However, we took stock of the situation around 1300hrs, taking into account the fact that it had been steadily raining for several hours as well as the fact that no one had yet completed the second of three laps in the KoH race. Quick math said we should probably break camp and work our way out of the muddy mess we were in and hope to catch the end of the race from our respective couches back home. So, we did that, including several winch pulls to get out of camp  :

Can't wait to see what we can dream up for KoH next year :thu:
Yep, I've wheeled one of those, too...
