Roys first build
You got it right. . .you have a 2.8 V6 no?
60* bell.
One of the coolest setups out there for that motor is:
Dodge Dakota Bellhousing. . .
Jeep AX15 5speed
Transfer case of choice. Is it right hand drop? If so, a Clocked Dana 300 would be the choice. If not. . .NP231.
Just talking about what would be the least amount of work. Everything is stock parts execpt for the 7/8" spacer/clocking ring for the transfer case if you did a D300. I run this exact tranny/tcase behind a V8. . .no problems period. . .ever. And I can break anything.
The SM465 idea probably came about because later s10s have the 4.3 which is a SBC bellhousing pattern. . .heck it is a SBC with 6 holes instead of 8.

Yeah, even this old fart can do it
We put the AX15/D300 combo in my kid's Scout II behind the 4.2 six holer. Might do some more stuff to it someday

Ours came out of an early 70's CJ5. We got a deal @ 200 bucks. May expect 3-500 depending on the greed level of the seller. Some of the other guys may have better handle on price, tho... do NOT get on from a Scout II. They don't have the SAE bolt pattern..

Ah, I have been rightfully chastised for the error of my ways
Jimmy knows this stuff. He and Trashy seem to have eidetic memories when it comes to this here stuff
