DNR and Groming in the Ahtanum

Mike Williams (DNR) sent me an email regarding the grooming season at the Ahtanum. Below is my response. Please contact Mike if you have additional comments....Steve


Mike, I appreciate your decisiveness regarding the grooming season in the Ahtanum. Like most 4x4 clubs, many members, bike, snowmobile, hunt, and fish. As a whole, the members of the Peak Putters understand and embrace the rights of other user groups. The establishment of specific annual grooming dates will help us and others NOT to encroach on the rights of snowmobile riders – many of whom appear to be fiercely passionate about 4x4s on groomed trail.

I will pass along this information to the club for their comments.

I have attached a response from Mike Williams DNR as I invited him to the August meeting. Does anyone want to send him a specific response or question prior to the meeting?


I am open that day and have you on my calendar to attend. We (Recreation Program) are on fire call all summer and I just got back from Tonasket chasing lightning strike fires so the only thing keeping me personally from attending would be that. I am going to cc two of my staff so they can attend in my absence if I’m on a fire. If I do go to a fire I WILL attend a future meeting for sure in the near future to discuss laws and policies etc like we planned. I would like to get our law enforcement officer to attend this too.



Concerning your last e-mail about grooming we are going to have defined groming (ha ha) dates and they will not be altered.



Also would you like me to bring any literature, maps etc?

Thanks for the effort on this Steve... After our trip this past spring, I think it will great to get more famliar with the planning and enforcement side of the grooming issue.

I for one would LOVE a good map, too...
