What are your thoughts about the Lily Pond and Kaner trails. Are these real bad trails? We are running Lilly Pond to Kaner and down. Going this way I am told there is a bad hill climb up Lilly Pond and going down Kaner could be bad. Let me know what you think about how bad it would be running those trails that way.

I don't consider them real bad trails, but they are among the most difficult in the Little Naches/Manastash area. I'd say they are both more difficult than what you guys normally run.
There are some tough hill climbs on Lily Pond. As long as they are dry you should be able to do them, some open diff rigs may need to winch at the top of the longest climb. They are very snotty when wet, and open diff rigs will struggle alot.
You are right about the downhills on Kaner too, I was leading a group of scouts a couple years ago and one of them lost brakes on one of the hills. It would have been a very bad situation if he hadn't gotten lucky and scrubbed the speed off by knocking down a small tree then getting wedged between two other trees. The Scout was totaled, bent frame and a broken front Dana 44 housing. I know you've been on Short and Dirty, the steepest hill on Kaner is a little bit less steep than the steepest hills on S&D.
Kaner sort of parallels a gravel road, you can easily skip sections of Kaner by going around them on the road. The gravel road also comes out at Lily pond, so if you do get up there, it is easy to get down to Little Naches without running Kaner.
When are you thinking about running them? If theres time, I might be able to take you on a "pre-run" of the trails, we could easily do both in a few hours, assuming conditions are good.

Thanks for the info and offer Ben. Waycrazy is taking us on those two trails this Saturday. He has ran them many times and told me about them. He doesn't know if we should take this group on them or not. We have a lot of open dif rigs and some guys are a little green. Some guys say those trails aren't bad and some say they are real bad. I just needed to hear some different opinions how the trails are. That is why I posted here. Everyone has a different thought about what is easy or hard. I don't like taking people that are too green on the harder trails. I also don't take the kids on the real bad trails.
I talked to Waycrazy about this part of the run and we agreed that if it is raining not to do those two trails this run. He said if we do the trails and made it up Lily Pond we would take the forest service roads down if the guys think Kaner is too bad.

Well, for what it is worth I have taken several groups on those trails. All the rigs have been 33"+ tires and at least one locker, and it has always taken much longer than I expected. I personally would not take a group with open diff rigs and green drivers on those trails, especially this time of year.
When you start on Lily pond, you should have a good idea right away how its going to be, the first thing up is a pretty good hill climb.

That is the info I am looking for.

Kaner is a MONSTER when it is wet and a little cute puppy when it is dry.
I would not want to drive down lower Kaner in the wetness with Noobs behind the wheel. Up is challenging, but at least you have winch cables.
If it is raining, anyone that is not fully prepared should stay away. Even if you are fully prepared, please tread very lightly in the muddy areas.

OG... is this that trail that we were on a few years back??? it was all wet and muddy and my dad broke his front drive line a split second after this picture:
After breaking he headed back down, and you, Roman, and myself kept going. I don't remember what trail that is but it sure is fun!

Ceg, sounds like your pulling some hard duty, green drivers/stockish rigs are a huge challenge/responsability. We've been fortunite/cursed to get new members SLOWLY.
So there's not more than 1-2 green drivers at any one time. Many hands make light work, or some $h!t.
But I'm with OG, run those trails clockwise for a desent day, counter for some good thrills!

I am sure glad I got your guys input and did not do those two trails. We ran Tripod and Buck Meadows instead and everything worked out great. What a blast! Out of the 9 rigs 5 were locked at least at one end. I ran the wifes open dif XJ and only found one place I had a little trouble and had to go around. It was on 311 running toward Buck Meadows. I didn't want to spend hours winching the open rigs up if I didn't have too. 311.1 got us around the steep off camber rock climb.
